    Ray did Matlab last year.
    Things may change ...

    Do's - study ? heh
subject info on IT Carlow site. [well subject topics - communications == physics, so no idea how accurate]

I've just finished third year networking, subjects and lecturers that we had are as follows - its quite possible things may change for you this year:

Management - Anita Kelly - Simple management accounting and a small amount of theory - Easy.

Programming (Java) - Eddie Hickey - Hairy stuff like RMI and CORBA, mutual exclusion, etc. Lots of lectures, less labs - Difficult.

Digital Communications - Rea Jordan - All Matlab stuff - implementing digital filters (hi/lo pass etc) in Matlab and applying them to wav files. Lots of labs/lecture time, extensive but fairly difficult to follow notes provided. This was the most difficult subject for me this year. - Difficult

Maths - Martina O'Gorman - About half of the maths course covers cryptography, the rest consists of stuff like number theory, group theory, matrices, queueing theory etc. - People who are good at maths found this easy, people like me who are ****e at maths found it far easier than 1st/2nd year :)

Wide Area Networking - Austin Kinsella - lots of theory on ISDN/frame relay/wan design etc. A few labs on routers and a few assignments on various topics. I thought this was an easy subject.

Telecoms - Keith Smyth - lots of stuff about PABX's, HDLC, VPNs, GSM/GPRS, Bluetooth, ATM, WiFi, flow control/routing etc. Easy to understand but there's so much material its hard to retain it all come exam time.

That's about it. Be prepared to find your own job for work experience, do not under any circumstances rely on the college for that.

easy maths is good to know :D
i dont think the java will be too hard, rmi hard??? what? maybe corba and mutual exclusion is.

the only ones that i think will be hard are digi comms and wans. wans because i think the material is just gonna be thrown at us and little tiny explanations of stuff will be left out, causeing confusion. wait and see.

keiths will be fine, but you're right, even at the end of second year there was so much material to look at its hard to read it all never mind remember it all. i find notes much easier to go through than paper hand outs, and next year is all gonna be paper hand outs i suppose?

All of eddie hickey and austin kinsella's notes are electronic. Rea Jordan provides both electronic and paper versions. The rest are paper.

fcuking lowpass and filters, I thought i finally got rid of that ****e. Im not really looking forward to this year even if it is a short year. I'll have no interest in Management what so ever, i dont wana do fcukin balance sheets. Eddie does my head in, i'm so used to Ross's teaching method and his notes are brill. I was looking at eddies notes on the glasnost website and i nearly piss myself laughin there so bad, a few words per page, reminds me of philip hickey. Do you have lab write ups for ray jordon, please say no. I heard austin's subject is easy cuz he doesn't know what he's a lazy bastard who wont come up with new exam questions. Ah i like keith, at least he's knows what he's talking about and he's very helpful too.

Lab write ups? Yes (only 2 or 3 during the year - they count towards a lot of the continuous assessment for his subject and are significantly easier than the theory side of it)

Eddie's notes make more sense if you're in the class when he presents them as you will NEED to take notes.

Austin does know what he's talking about, but yes the same questions tend to come up a lot :) The whole exam paper fitted on 1 page.

austin more than likely does know what he's talking about, maybe he just doesnt like to convey his knowledge to his students.
lets not start a bitching thread.
the low pass filters become more interesting next year imo.
im fearing programming if its eddie teaching it :( maybe it will be noel o hara, maybe he will be better at teachin something he knows about

Elvis ; What your saying here, is giving off the wrong impression .... or a bad impression.
Austin Kinsella I'd regard as knowledgable, he rewrote new revision of cisco exams didn't he ?
And for once I agree with steve ;) ... I'd go easy on bitching, enough of it is done, unnecessarely

i just meant to say, i heard but dont actually know, that austin is lazy.

Noel O Hara teaching programming would be great, not that we would learn much but he wouldn't fail you. I hope so steve. Imagine passing just by going to his class. haha. Yah im not really looking forward to programming either, if we had ross, you'd know what to expect in exams and really in all the classes. His notes are the best 2. Everything is covered. I think because eddie's teaching it, most of the class wont take it seriously and low attendance as year progresses. Unless he gives really easy exams, i think everybody will find it tough going. I thought the previous 2 years of java were a breeze but this year I know it's going to be rock hard just because of the lecturer. Last year I never listened to one thing eddie said. Last year eddies class was a joke, thats not bitching, thats the truth!.

I like playing around with filters in programs but i dont want to make one, but maybe ray can make it more interesting...!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 920 ✭✭✭elvis2002

u got shafted? wat a bitch. did u have any days off last year, like fridays or anything or do they space 16 hours into 5 days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

yeah id say there's some nice short days there, one day off a week would be nice, friday hangover day

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 920 ✭✭✭elvis2002

yah i'd find it very tough to go if you had management on a monday and thats it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

work experience! madness! hopefully the best part about third year, some practical experience!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 920 ✭✭✭elvis2002

i just hope i can get a good job. my results are best in the class so i hope that helps, keith said they would but he also told me the college got everybody jobs which has turned out to be a lie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I think everyone got a job, but only a couple got them through the college. Keith himself got 3 people jobs - 2 in the army and 1 in 3com (that was the best job anyone got I think)

is that where john is working? that place sounds fun!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Yeah it is. they gave him a $1000 bonus for his excellence on some project in the netherlands, jammy bastard!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

ffs! well done john, i hope i get a good placement and some good money, ohh and i hope i pass maths before all of that!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 920 ✭✭✭elvis2002

he went to the netherlands? Cool. I thought that 3com place was gone bust, i know people who took redundancy pay there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

i think there was more than 1 of those 3com places and only 1 shut down
hey did he actually go over and stay in the netherlands?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

They had a manufacturing plant here that shut down. John's working in R&D. He went over to the netherlands for a few days here and there. based in Dublin somewhere.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 920 ✭✭✭elvis2002

i know there's a 3com near blanchardstown. Im not aware of any other places. Is everybody getting good enough pay or the bare bones of starvation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

well i so far ive heard the cheapest earnings is ~200 and the most would probably be john because of the bonus he received.

    tittys!

I think most of us are getting reasonable-for-students wages - i'm on 327 per week before tax.
