pc problem

I've had this problem for a while now and I have run out of ideas. Ever since I got my new pc it has done fine in benchmarks (6500+ on 3dMark03) but has not performed well in a lot of games such as Deus Ex 2, farcry, breed, bfv, c&c:generals and sometimes even CoD. In these games the fps drops quite low(30 and lower). I dont think it has anything to do with programs in the background cos i run the benchmarks with the same stuff running.
I've no idea what the problem is and it's starting to piss me off cos I spent a lot on the pc.
System is... amd fx51, ati 9800xt, 1gb ddr3200 corsair xms ram, 2x80gb hard disks in sata raid, audidgy 2 sound card and KT800 mobo.

    Thanks for any ideas

    Any other questions just ask.

Check your monitor refresh rate and whether or not you have vsync on by default. A lot of the benchmarks bypass vsync and AA etc so often you are not running your games under the same conditions. I assume all your drivers etc are up to date...

Are you running far-Cry at 1600*1200? That's a high rez to run it at - I've seen 9800XTs struggle at 1024*768 with everything at high on that Game. Anti-Aliasing as Spunj has said can also make everything crawl - check you driver settings in your control panel also make sure you have your MBs AGP driver installed.

    I have a 9800xt and a 3.2 p4 at 3.6 and I have no trouble with those games.

I have the deusx 2 demo but have to play it at 1280x1024. The same with far cry, breed and vietnam but with full detail. All the others I play at 1600x1200 with full detail and I get no problems.

Do you have AA and AF turned on? I have AA at 2 and AF at 8 and still have no trouble..

yeh i have AA and AF completely off, I am running all the games in 1280x1024. How do i check if i have the mobo agp drivers? Also someone on another forum mentioned the problem could be driver incompatabilities?

not sure how to check, but make sure the card is in AGP mode, and not PCI compatibility mode.

In the ATi Control Pannel, goto SmartGart and see if its AGP 8x, if it is ur AGP drivers are ok. Turn off fast writes, the general opinion about them is they offer little performance gain, so turning them off adds stability and OC potential. Check your AGP apperature in bios, i cant remember really but i THINK that it should be set to half your card memory, ie if you've a 256mb the apperature should be 128. That could be BS but i read it somewhere. I dont usualy believe everything i read BTW!

agp is 8x, fast writes are off, agp aperature is fine.

agp aperture makes no difference. It's hardly ever used and when it is it's only small amounts of memory. Makes no differencereally what way you set it.
