I was just wondering how often do you upgrade?

why do you upgrade? because of the real need or the need to have the best and the latest?

do you upgrade right away when something comes out? or wait for it's price to fall and then upgrade?

    My present machine I bought in 2000, it's a 733mhz monster with 384 megs of ram and a geforce3.

If I could afford it I'd jump up to an athlon64.

Going to have to eventually, i know this beauty is fading, she's coming apart at the seems captain. I've been putting off an upgrade for the last year.

    donations welcome.

A lot of people are into that buy new stuff/sell old stuff every six months, which is cool, but I like my pc reliable and the same. (I need it to be for work.) I'd be more into buying a beast now and keeping it purring with extra ram/faster gpu when its needed.Modding/overclocking is cool, but I see my computer as just a box to let me do my work and hobbies - design, web stuff etc. If I had the cash I'd be more into the stuff a lot of the peeps here get up to, but it's an expensive hobby I guess.

Doom3 though, and half life 2...talk about forcing the issue... :D

    lol!

    computer > girlfriend

    Computer:
    pros: makes you very happy
    educates you
you can just turn it off
    can make you money
cons: eats lots of money but this con is overruled by "makes you very happy" pro
sometimes has problems - again fixable - or is overruled by eats lots of money that is overruled by makes you eventually happy!

    Girlfriend:
pros: hmm, dunno, company and support? naaah.. computer can do that!
    sex - oh yea!
cons: sometimes can't shut them up!
eats lots of money too! but unlike computers, that doesn't make you happy!
    their parents
    commitment thing!
    list goes on and on........

I upgrade when something needs replacing and I can afford to replace.

I got my machine for €1200 in Sept 2002 and so far I've done:

June '04 - Replaced PSU and got some new fans
    Xmas '03 - Replaced mouse
    October '03 - Added 2nd 120gb HD
    June '03 - Added 512mb more RAM
    March '03 - Replaced keyboard
    January '03 - Replaced speakers
    Xmas '02 - Added 2nd monitor

When I can afford it, I intend to replace the main monitor, (because it's not very good) and, if I can get it soon (next 2-3 months), I'll get a processor upgrade. If I can't get it soon, I'll hold out for socket 939 to get cheap and do the mobo, cpu, ram and gfx in one expensive upgrade sometime earlyish next year.

I used to upgrade every 2 years, however the last one lasted about 4 years (was a really good machine at the time and I wasn't gaming too much). I built a shiney new one earlier this year, but still have the old one, so it's not so much upgrading anymore as acquiring more stuff :). I plan on building another before the end of the year for home theatre type stuff, however I'll always be tempted by a new graphics card, or maybe a water-cooling unit for the hell of it.

Hmmz, basically i do it every odd year. Usually do the gfx card one year and the mobo/cpu another (usually chuck ram in then awell).

However this year i spent 1800 on a system with a gfx card to come. Decided i wanted to have a whopper of a pc for doom3 and the future.

Usually tho gfx card one year and rest another. (does mean that there is always sommet outdated in my machine tho :p )

I dont upgrade as such .... just constantly adding bits on ... some are new bleeding edge components, but most are older technology bought because their cost was acceptable.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I usually upgrade the CPU/Motherboard/RAM every 2 years. Might add a new hard disk/extra RAM etc at random times in between. I usually upgrade the graphics card every 2 years also - but not the same year as I upgrade the cpu/board/ram. Never buy a bleeding-edge graphics card as the cost cannot be justified (I only got a 9800 pro a month ago, before that it was a GeForce 4 Ti4200 for 2 years).

I used to upgrade around once a year 'till about 2 years ago, my last upgrade was a cd burner, cpu and mobo, now I'm poor......

PCI-e isn't really worth the money unless you want to SLI, (Buy 2x 6800 and run in paralell) there is no point thinking PCI Express as the bottle neck isn't AGP bus.

The jump from AGP 4x to 8x doesn't offerr more than 1 or 2 FPS anyway!

If you buy PCI Express you will basically have to pay EXTRA for a new VGA card of the same speed as AGP.

Indeed the Nvida PCI-E cards don't even use PCI-E. They have an AGP to PCI bridge and are released purly for folk with newer motherboards who need a 3d Card.

The next generation of cards will use PCI-E, so be thinking 8 months- 1 year from now. If you are happt to wait, then that's the time the cards will take advantage of PCI-E.

I note that the X-300 and X-600 PCI-E cards are pants

The X-800 XT PCI-E card is great, but will be bloddy expensive, and offers a TINY advantage over AGP.

I normally upgrade when the current games don't run well on my pc and I never buy the fastest equipment as it normally way over priced

That's my plan instead of buying a new rig in another year just get a second ( much cheaper by then ) 6800 and I have instant upgrade :D. I'm also wanting PCI-e because this rig may afto keep going for many years more as a hand-me-down so if anything extra is needed it can still be bought. I'll see how things look like at X-Mas.

Years ago when PC performance really mattered I would upgrade something on my gaming rig every few months.. more ram, better video card, better monitor etc etc. However in the last two years things have slowed down quite a bit, in that by and large 'decent' hardware has been well able to handle the games on offer.

My current machine is a year and a half old, the only thing I've upgraded in it so far is the vid card (I went from a GF 4200 to an ATI 9800 pro). I doubt I'll bother upgrading anything else until the next-gen stuff like PCI express is well established.

I added a 128MB stick of memory, and changed the processor from a 733MHz PIII to a 933 one (was a free upgrade). Apart from that nothing has changed since I bought it four years ago this month. Mind you I'm not a gamer whatsoever, so the only time it bugs me is when running Dreamweaver MX 2004 (it's slooow). Hopefully going to get a new rig before Christmas.

Well before I got my computer in Feburuary of this year I upgrade my previous comp 3 times but the machines I had before that I only upgraded once in about 2 years. Since I got my comp iin feb this year I have done 4-5 upgrades already not to mention snapped up a second pc which I now intend to upgrade. If I can offload my laptop I may end upgrading both machines again.

my biggest problem is that I've got kids to feed and put through school...

although I a strongly argue my case that a smooth running DOOM3 is far more important to the over all long and short term satisfaction of the family, my wife doe not share the same view... ;)

only messing... love the little monsters :D

I upgrade every 3 years with an 1 1/2 year intermittant upgrade of a graphics and mem.... has worked for me for the last 12 years....

more importantly I do a morphing upgrade which means that I end up with one by stripping the last (where it makes sense).

    The Duke : ))
