Does anyone know whether you can use MP3 players such as the Creative Zen or the iPod on board a plane? (I wonder can this thread end up with people arguning which mp3 player is best... they usually do... sorry for not mentioning the iRiver!!)

It depends. Aer Lingus have banned HD based players outright, Some other airlines say not during take off and landing (air france I think) and then others say they are allowed all the time (BA I think).

The CIB supplement in the Business Post had a pretty comprehensive listing of which airlines allowed what a couple of weeks ago. If I remeber tomorrow I'll try and dig it up for you

Its crazy isn't it. Air Korea even provide (hideously expensive) wifi internet access on their boeing planes, while some others won't let you use anything electrical at all.

Although, at the same time The airlines do have a responsibility to be as safe as possible.

There is also the general public to think off, people can percive them as a threat and it might be better off in the airlines regard to just not allow them on board.
I'm pretty sure I seen someone using an mp3 player type thing when flying from bangkok (qantas)

I used a Muvo^2 HDD-based player on a 3-hour flight to and from Spain on an Aer Lingus flight. No-one said anything to me. The safety sheet yokie doesn't say they're banned, only laser-based things (they did include DVD players in laptops funnily enough).

That SBP article about aer lingus' anti-ipod stance

    http://www.thepost.ie/web/DocumentView/did-624053583-pageUrl--2FMisc-2FBusiness-Resources-2FComputers-In-Business.asp

They probably just spend their time checking people in saying "God Why did you get that. The I-river, rio karma, creative zen is sooooo much better".

    Bit like boards then.

    Hmmm
I accidently left my phone on in my jacket whilst flying to London-only to hear it go beep beep half way over with a welcome message to o2 UK at 30,000 feet :o
    The plane landed safely.
I was on another BA flight where there was an announcement mid flight where the first officer asked for passengers to check that their phones were switched off as there was interference.
I can log onto orange in the UK from here in south Wicklow with just an 8310, the cell must be in wales somewhere and is drifting more than 50 miles across the Irish sea.

Its a stupid rule but if your working on the plane and you have to check with each passenger, who may be asleep etc. what exactly they have connected to their headphones - you can see some reason.

I remember using a tape walkman back in the day and the airhostess just asked to stop using it regardless of the fact it wasnt a discman. She was clueless but to be honest arguing on a flight, whilst everyone around you listens: Bad idea in my opinion!

Whats Ryanairs stance? Im getting a flight home in a few days...Lemme guess, you have to pay extra to use it? :D

    Yeah i'd be interested too.

Was on an AerLingus flight a few years ago and was told i couldn't use a gameboy!

Hopefully RyanAir dont have a "No iPod " policy

I've being on 9 flights in the last 2 months dude and have used my creative zen jukebox on each one. Just have to turn it off before takeoff and when you make the landing. If they ask(which they havent yet) just say its a PDA with no moveable parts

My brother lives in Norway and he generally doesn't get too much grief in regards listening to his mp3 or mini disc player, his argument being that there's no emmissions from the device so how could it possibly interefere with anything? As far as Ryanair are concerned, i'd say they'd let you use them, but you'd probably have to sit in the toilet for the duration of the flight :D

Seems as though were not talking about decent arguements here but how stupid the policy is.

How'd you explain a PDA with headphones?

The funniest thing is Ryanair say "Under advice from the IAA, we now allow the use of discmans etcc..." but Aer Lingus say "Under advice from the IAA, it is not permitted to use discmans etc..".

If they caused any interference with the plane why doesn't a terrorist fill a suitcase with ipod or iRivers and send them on a plane?

Lan parties on planes!! Woohoo!! :p

Hmmm, you're going to get a lot of people hacking into laptops, snooping around for some valuable documents.

The planes that provide wifi, probably still wouldn't let you use your mobile. :p
