Bluetooth/iSync Problem

    Hi there,

I am having a problem with iSync which I think is Bluetooth-related.

My Mac came with OS X 10.2.3, but I have upgraded to 10.2.8 using Software Update.

Recently, when I launch iSync, the application crashes. This does not happen, however, if Bluetooth is disabled. If ISync is started and Bluetooth is enabled then the program will not crash; however the synching fails - the progress bar completes, but a dialog appears complaining that my phone cannot be found.

I tried reinstalling both iSync and Bluetooth using Pacifist, but the problem has not been fixed. In fact, I now find that I cannot send files from my mac to my phone.

    Any ideas?

I plan to get an external drive over the next few weeks and I will probably just copy my hard disk to that and do a complete reinstall. But I'd appreciate any advice on the above in the meantime.

Is it internal or external bluetooth? I had my external dlink usb bluetooth module die on me not long after i got it, can't get it replaced easily as i bought it in the US :(

As far as i know the internal module supplied with powerbooks and ibooks uses the same chipset... so it could be a hardware problem.

Isn't there a Bluetooth device firmware update supposed to be applied to macs with BT. I think it's only for Macs with internal BT though - would this include yours?

Can you detect any devices with BT ? Different phones or PDA's for example.
    Have you upgraded iSync ?
Does your BT device require a conduit to connect to iSync ?

Mine is internal - and I have the latest updates installed.

I have the latest OS X 10.2 update installed, so that presumably includes iSync.

I don't want to mess around with it too much (OS 9 was so much easier...!) so I think I might do as I suggest above and do a complete system reinstall. At least then I'd know if it was a hardware issue.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

    Cheers! :D

I don't think the OS X upadates will affect any apps only the OS. When you run Software Update in preferences it will list all apps that require updating, I presume you've checked here if iSync requires an update.

The bluetooth software updates do not include the "firmware" update, are you sure you have installed the "firmware" and not just the software.

If you do go ahead with the reinstall get your hands on Panther (10.3.x) it's a major improvement over Jaguar (10.2.x) IMO.

any of my iSync issues have usually been sorted by deleting and re-establishing the pairing to the phone, or applying iSync / Bluetooth updates if applicable

as Zener says, best to check your versions against the relevant elements (not just relying on Software Update)

the Apple Bluetooth area lists the relevant software and firmware updates available (check box on right of page)

the firmware update can be applied to the internal module or the D-Link USB adapter (Revision B2 or later). For anyone with the USB adapter, take note the update will make it incompatible with Windows. You can see the Revision details on the back label of the adapter printed beside H/W, more info:
    http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=34

anyone updating the firmware needs to pay attention to any applicable Read Me / Release notes. it's important if using a laptop make sure you are plugged in. don't allow the machine to go to sleep. (anyone with a supported D-Link USB adapter needs to plug it directly into a port on the computer i.e. not via a hub). be sure to let the update run without interruption (i.e. don't do anything else on the machine)...

iSync is currently at 1.4 and is available for download from the Apple iSync area. Although iSync 1.5 is supposed to be out shortly...

just to follow up iSync 1.5 was made available this week through Software Update or for direct download

note: the applicable Bluetooth version recommended for use with iSync depending on your OS version (see box on right of link above)

1.5 update details and requirements outlined in the iSync 1.5 readme
