What lense for Canon 300D?

I've got the kit lense but am in the market for something better without breaking the bank if possible. I have heard good things about the Canon 50 1.8 for portraits.

I like taking people shots but also do some landscapes and city scenes. Will the kit lense be sufficient for this and will the 50 1.8 be good for portraits?

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 is really good for the price range. It's the 'standard' lens - standard because its the closest thing to the human eye and it's got something to do with ratio of focal length to film size or something.

In terms of sharpness, it's excellent.

For general use it's great because you work harder to get a better shot so it forces to you be more creative. Not sure about portraits, though. Personally, i think it's fine, but I also like 28mm for more informal and dynamic portrait shots (I'm really hoping to save up for a Bronica once I get a job). Some portraitists say a 100mm is best because it minimises the kinds of perspectival distortions you get with wider angled lenses.

Bottom line: I invested in a 50mm and never looked back!

Any EF lens will fit that camera (but that kit lens is specifically for the 300D). Don't forget the magnification of the digital ratio on the lens, so a 50mm will give you results of about an 80mm

What range is the kit lens that came with the 300D?

    Valentia.

300D kit lens is 18-55 - effectively 29-88 with the 1.6 magnification factor.

I'm definitely getting the 50mm 1.8. It's an amazing little lens for the price, and probably the closest I'll get to an L lens until my bank balance recovers a bit. I'm lusting over the 17-40L as a replacement for the kit, but it's not gonna happen any time soon!

Another vote for the 50mm 1.4, you're not only getting the extra f stop but you're getting a superior quality lens that won't suffer from barrel distortion, pin cushioning, etc as much as the 1.8 jobbie. Of course, such a superior optic will come at a price :D It's worth it though.

yes the out of focus areas are much nicer, see here for more info. this is a lens you will keep long after you trade in your 300d

I vote 50mm f1.8. You will be 250 euro closer to the 17-40mm L & the difference between the f1.4 & f1.8 is only slight.

the 1.4 has a couple of slightly better features than the 1.8 but depending on what it's being used for this may not be important. for me the 1.4 is a better lens

    the correct link is http://www.seittipaja.fi/data/Pontification/b_Photography/g_Fifty_versus_fifty/a_Fifty_versus_fifty.html

You should note the 1.8 lens they compare is the mk1, if you buy new you will be buying the mk2.
