there is currently an independent review going on as regards the licence fee, with signs pointing to a cut of some kind.
Reasons are that licence payers have increased, and so has the value of the money RTE were getting in the first place (or something like that). I dont think it has anything to do with the cost of housing, but I'm sure FF will tell you its one of the reasons if the cut is made.

Ahern has basically made the fee hikes/cuts independent from government, which will hopefully put an end to political biases in return for more money. It should (theoretically) help to provide RTE with a well needed kick up the arse, letting them know fee cuts can happen just as much as fee rises, so they better start putting their money into useful things, or the government will put it somewhere else.
Thats the idea anyway, if it works or not is yet to be seen... I think its just one of many things needed to be done to make RTE more productive...

in short, there is likely to be some kind of fee cut, and a lot of RTE moaning.

/edit heres a link from the indo, you need a subscription to read it...
RTE's licence fee increases could be reduced as a result of an external review which has been ordered by Communications Minister Dermot Ahern.

The minister is about to appoint consultants to conduct a review of the licence fee paid by broadcasters to RTE. In particular it will examine "possible distortions" in the advertising market as a result of the fee.

another interesting aspect is that the committee will compare RTE and its PSB abilities with other European PSBs, so they could be in for a shock.

(apologies for turning this into a very 'media' angled thread, but the man did ask!)

What I find hilarious is the foreigners who come here and are surprised one day by some guy coming to their door demanding to see their TV license, they usually think they are having their leg pulled.
