    Disability Authority launches publication
    27/07/2004 - 15:24:35

The National Disability Authority today gave recommendations for Personal Assistance Services (PAS) for people with disabilities in Ireland.

The recommendations are included in the latest issue of its publication, Disability Agenda, which was launched today.

The issue, entitled International Practice in Personal Assistance Services for People with Disabilities, looks at several international models and gives recommendations for Personal Assistance Services (PAS) for people with disabilities in Ireland.

The objective of Disability Agenda is to support the work of the NDA in further raising public awareness about disability and influencing the development of services.

The National Disability Authority works on behalf of the State to promote and help to secure the rights of people with disabilities.

I'm sure the intentions are good but reading that article reminds me a little of the committee scene in The Life of Brian as they discuss the action to take to help Brian. Here's where I am coming from: there are 500 kids in Mayo alone requiring the use of an o/t, western care don't have any (they should have two), so after many months the western health board agreed to provide one, yes that's right one. It takes her one day to see each kid...you don't have to be carol voderman to do the maths. At the moment We are trying to get for my son, a new chair for the house, a chair for the playschool he will be attending in September, his bed re-adjusted, a new buggy for outdoors, his old one is broken, needs to be adjusted (most parents will know how quickly children grow) and has no rain cover. And somemore input on an extension we are currently building would be desirable. Personally we have had some progress in gaining access to the o/t, but not all parents would be as vocal or pushy as us.

It's all very well talking about providing services but how about actually providing them!
