Firefox and Livemarks (Live bookmarks)

Just picked myself up a nightly build of Firefox (from the branch, so this feature is going to make it into next version - 1.0 preview release). They have a cool new feature called Live Bookmarks (or Livemarks for short).

Basically when you go to a website which has a feed setup (and is defined in a <link> tag, as in the case of most blogs) you will see a little lightning bolt icon in your status bar. Clicking on this icon will allow you to create a Livemark for this site. The Livemark is a bookmark folder which contains bookmarks for each entry in the feed :) Of course if the site doesn't have its feed defined in a <link> tag you can add a Livemark manually for it. Pretty cool feature if I do say so myself and proof the Firefox team aren't just sitting on their hands when it comes to innovative features. :)

Never used feeds (RSS are they?) but I do use folders full of related bookmarks that I want to open at once (open in tabs) - very useful.

Yeah, you can get it for existing thunderbird builds as well (It's the forumzilla extension). It's pretty good. I prefer Sharpreader though for news aggregation, I like the 3 pane interface (Thunderbird only has 2 panes effectively).

Yeah RSS is one form of live feed, there's also ATOM. (RDF is also used to refer to some versions of RSS - the 0.90 and 1.0 versions I believe). Basically it's an XML style summary of articles on a news site or blog or similar site. The XML file can then be parsed by news aggregators so you don't need to go visiting each news site in turn checking for articles, you can just open up your aggregator and see all the articles in one place.

Some sites have their feed defined in a <link> tag. With these sites you can just type the main site url into your news aggregator or use the lightning bolt icon in new Firefox builds to subscribe to it. In sites that don't use this, you have to go looking for the feed. Look for something like "Syndicate this site" or "Backend" or icons along the lines of atom.gif, rss1.gif or xml.gif
