AMD Overheating?

    Hi,

recently installed an AMD Athlon 1100Mhz, on an MSI/Via KT7 mobo, with 640MB SDRAM.

Had a very stable system before (Athlon 700Mhz) since I upgraded the system has been hanging, most noticeably when playing video files.

What I did notice was the temperature difference between the 700Mhz (usually ran at 36C) and the new one (running at 46C). I am using the same heatsink, but from what I've been reading here, 46C is not a very high temp at all.

Any ideas on what to do here, maybe a better fan/heatsink?
If so any suggestions, for something cheap, but effective?

did you use some kind of thermal compound when fitting the old heatsink on the new CPU?

Recently had a similar problem, Also with an AMD chip (amd 64 this time) and also with an MSI board. My temp at idle was 62, and shot to 72 under load. And the bios was telling the machine to stop cause of the temp. It was a known problem with MSI bios. And apparently it isn't the first time they have done it. I had to download a beta bios and flash with that. It sorted the problem, but flashing with a beta bios is risky. You've an older board so I'd say the problem, if it is with the board will have been properly fixed at this stage. Try getting the latest bios for your machine and see if that rectifys the problem.

See if you can find out any more info here http://forum.msi.com.tw/ that might help you.

Stephen - Yes, got some thermal paste on there.

Krimson - It's got a fairly recent BIOS version.

    Thanks for the tips tho'

    u need a new heatsink.

the 700mhz heatsinks were not meant for 1.1ghz chips. Bit of common sense like.

    Astrofool,

yea, that's what I was thinkin, but if the temperature stays around 46C, why would I need a better heatsink?

With AS5 ya use about half a grain of rice. Better to put on less as very little is needed to conduct.

Mmmm, well guess what! I did go out and buy a "better" heatsink, says for AMD Athlons up to 1.5Ghz on the box, and guess what, it looks exactly like the old one!

The sink is exactly the same, well metallic blue instead of plain old silver, but the fan is a bit thicker and lo and behold, is even slower than the original!

Hasn't gone above 3900 rpm when my old one regularly hit 4500 rpm!!!

    Interesting?

What's more interesting is the temperature is still around 46-49C

    Confused :o
