Are the upgrade kits a good starting point for building a new cheap system? The kit I was looking at contains the following for 353 euro (on komplett)

    123708 - Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz Boxed PC800 Socket PGA478, 1MB cache, Prescott
    123081 - Abit IS7-E2 Mainboard for S478/800mhz I865PE, SATA, ATX, Dual-DDR, LAN
    113518 - TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB CL2.5 Memory184-P (for DDR-PC400MHz)

It seems cheap enough and a good starting point but are there any better starting/upgrade kits out there?

Make sure you price all the components seperately and add them up. Sometimes it works out cheaper than the upgrade bundle.

I would like to keep it all under 600. I have hard drive, cd burner and monitor already. So I really only need case, upgrade kit and graphics card.

well what exactly do you have at the moment???
600 could bring you far depending.....
graphics could cost you from 150 for a 9600xt to 400.
ram could cost you from 50 for 256mb ddr400 to 300 for a gig of top notch CL2 ram.
cpu could cost you 80 for an xp2500 or 150 or close to it for a 3200.

you wanna be more specific on your requirements/needs

€600 should get you the following from Komplett. If you're planning on playing games it will perform better than your P4 2.8 kit above.

    Athlon 64 3000+
    NForce based motherboard
    512MB of RAM
    ATI 9800 Pro

edit: I forgot to mention that on a P4 motherboard supporting Dual Channel you should get 2x256MB instead of 1X512MB

My basic requirement is "CHEAP"! That's why I was asking about the kits. Performance is not a major issue.

    cheap, as everyone knows, xp2500.
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=120751&cks=PRL
190 euro + 9600XT @ 150 euros and get yourself a case. if you your trying to save on money, whats wrong with your current case?

My old case is far to small....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,219 ✭✭✭Redrocket

then another 100 - 150 on a case and psu depending on what you want from a case

If you're going to spend €150 on an Antec case then make it an Antec P160. You'll need to get a PSU seperately though.

It's a beauty with front panel LED temperature monitors for 2 probes, all aluminium construction, 120mm slow fan, and everything designed with minimal noise in mind.
