Gardai investigate events prior to crash
    From:The Irish Independent
    Sunday, 25th July, 2004
    FRANK KHAN

THE death toll on the roads reached 215 last night after another week of carnage which left nine people dead.

Early yesterday, the driver of car was killed in a two-vehicle collision on the Enniskerry Road just outside Stepaside village in Co Dublin. Last night gardai were investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. It is understood a short while before the tragedy, two women were hit by a car a short distance away at Lamb's Cross and another car was struck on the road before the car involved in the fatal crash collided with a second vehicle.

On Friday, two people died in separate accidents in Dublin and Co Westmeath. An elderly woman was killed when she was struck by a truck in Ranelagh. She was named as Maureen Whelan, 73, of Woodstock Crescent, Ranelagh.

A young man died in a single-vehicle accident at Dalystown on the Mullingar-Kilbeggan Road at 6.30pm. He was named yesterday as James Fanning, 24, of Beechlawns, Mullingar. On Tuesday, a man died following a two-vehicle collision in Co Laois. He was Javid Iqbal, 39, of Castle Way, Kilminchy, Portlaoise. He died after his car collided with a lorry near Ballybrittas, Co Laois.

The previous day, Myles Toland, 30, of New Houses, Carrigans, Co Donegal was killed and another man seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling hit a wall at Carrigans.

In Co Clare on Sunday, Kathleen O'Shea, 51, of Chapel Drive, Kilrush, was killed when the car in which she was a front seat passenger went out of control and struck two walls. The accident happened at around 4pm on the main Ennis-to-Kilrush Road, a few hundred yards from Ennis town centre.

Last Saturday, two men were killed and five people injured, two critically, when two cars collided on the N11 at Scratnagh Cross, Co Wicklow. They were the driver of one of the cars, James Noone, 54, of Ocean Crest in Arklow and the front seat passenger in the other car, Eamonn Furlong, 59, of Green View, Adamstown, Co Wexford. Mr Furlong's son, Martin, 25, died later from his injuries.

Mr Noone had recently moved to Arklow from Greystones, Co Wicklow.

Meanwhile, a Garda chief has taken the unprecedented step of placing a notice in local newspapers expressing concern at the road carnage in the area in his charge. So far this year, 24 people have been killed in Co Donegal, including eight young people in the past month in the Inishowen area. This exceeds the overall total for last year.

Chief Superintendent Noel White described the situation as "unacceptable" and he called on the community to face up to the problems about road safety and examine their responsibilities.

Man arrested on drink driving suspicion after fatal crash
    From:ireland.com
    Sunday, 25th July, 2004

A man was arrested at the scene of a fatal crash in Dublin's Stepaside on suspicion of drink driving, it was confirmed today.

Gardai at Stepaside Garda Station are speaking to a number of witnesses over the collision between two Mercedes cars which happened around 1am yesterday.

The man who was arrested was brought to Dun Laoghaire Garda Station. Where he was processed and subsequently released.

Officers said shortly before the crash on the Enniskerry Road, two female pedestrians were injured two-miles away by a large-dark car, also possibly a Mercedes.

It is believed a large number of people are being questioned to see if there are any links between the two incidents.

The garda forensic team are currently examining a car involved in the head-on collision. The elderly driver, who died in the crash, has been named as 71-year-old Gordon Geary of Orwell Road, Rathgar.

A 70-year-old female passenger, believed to be his wife, is being treated for broken bones in St Vincent's hospital but her condition is not life-threatening.

One of the two women, who were hit at the junction of Blackglen Road and Woodside Road around 12.50am, is still in a critical condition.

The pedestrians were injured after a car failed to stop. The 17-year-old woman is in a serious condition in Beaumont Hospital, while the 19-year-old is in a stable condition in St Vincent's Hospital.
