Braces

    Hello Everyone,

Long Time Member and Poster here at PI.

Quick question. I'm 23 years old now and my teeth are really starting to bug me. I have an overbite on my upper two incisor teeth aswell as an overlap and the rest are slightly crowded. Same with the lower set.

Now, the job I do is a high stress, high conflict and image is important. I think that if I get braces it would damage that image alot? I think that I'd be concious of them and they'd be a source of much humour among my clients. In your opinion, do you think braces look stupid on people who are out of their teenage years and would you take them any less seriously than you would people without braces?

Another Question. I was given advice to get braces up the North of Ireland because they are much cheaper than down here. Would anyone know:
    A) any dentists up there that I could contact and
    B) do Dentists in the Republic perform on another dentists work? and
    C) Costs in the Republic Vs. Up North?

    Thanks for any advice! :)

I'm not a dentist and I don't have any info to offer about dentists, but I have lots of friends who have or have had braces. If your teeth make you feel self-conscious, then talk to a dentist. Find out what your options are and then decide. I know people who have traditional braces and the invisible braces. I have friends who got braces while in their 20's and are very glad they did. I know people in their 30's & 40's who have braces and wish they had done it years ago. (The older you get, the more difficult the decision seems to be.) If image is important in your work, then it would seem all the more reason to take care of it now.
They don't look stupid on people of any age. You may get some gentle teasing, just keep your sense of humor. :)

My sister had braces that you just put in at night. See a dentist, i'm sure there are other options available.

I have the same overbite problem.
I got braces fitted about two months ago. They're transparent plastic and to be honest , it took a while for anyone to notice them - I actually had to point them out to some people at work!
As a result, I am much less self conscious about them than I thought I'd be.
Infact I wish I had gotten them years ago.

I would say go for it.

My orthodontist is in the republic - I wasn't bothered going up north coz I didn't want to have to take half days from work etc. every time they needed a tightening.

You can claim back apparantly one to two thirds of the cost of braces on the MED 2 scheme.

    Hope this helps.........

you may look silly with braces, but how silly do your teeth look currently?
I had braces for a long time, definatly worth it. Perfect teeth now.

Mine are costing a grand total of 3600 - but don't forget you can get some of it back.
They probably would have been cheaper had I have opted for the metal type, but I got the transparent ones instead, and I'm glad I did.

Tightening is every 3 months or so - because I have only had them 2 mnths so far, I havn't actually gotten them tightened yet, but I hear it's a killer - will probably be eating soup for days - it'll be worth it in the long run though - I can actually see a difference already, which is amazing.

I paid 850 downpayment and the rest is in installments every 3 months.

    hope this helps

I wear braces and don't feel self-conscious about them at all. I actually like them, it adds to my geekiness (glasses+braces+science degree)!!! Mine are tightened every 8 weeks. My orthodontist says my problem is rare-my teeth are too small for my mouth-the opposite of overcrowding!

I had mine tightened every month, and you could only really feel it for about an hour after they were tightened in my experience.

I think its definately worth doing, at almost any age, but the younger the better obviously, as it will probably take about 4 years from begining to end if you have to get "train tracks".

It seems everyones experience is different, but feel free to pm with any questions you may have.
