disfunctional cd drives

i can't explain the background of this problem, all i know is someone changed some bios/cmod settings when my pc was broken and trying to boot of the floppy drive we don't have (i was away)

as is now: the computer won't acknowledge the existance of my cd drive or cd-rw drive. when it boots up (& is set to auto detect drives) it simply reads secondary master: none & secondary slave: none. if i set it to manually detect the drives it stops on startup telling me that secondary master has failed and secondary slave has failed.
for whatever reason both of them were there when i booted up this morning and i presumed all was okay but it proceeded to slow down to the point of freezing when i was running a game so i restarted and the drives had vanished again.

i'm pretty inept and wouldn't normally try fix this kind of crap myself but the older brother who handles the pc is in america and i'd like my cd drives for the next week so...if this makes sense to anyone i'd appreciate their help
