    Hi,

    My fiancée is American.

Will she automatically get a work permit for Ireland and for the rest of the EU when we are married?

Will it matter if we get married in America?

Does it take time to get one or is it given quickly?

    Thanks

When you 2 get married she will qualify as a permanent resident which means that she does not need a work permit at all. It will not matter where you get married.

When you do get married you 2 need to go see the immigration officer in your local garda station or in Dublin its the place on Burgh Quay. They will stamp your fiancee's passport that she is now a irish resident and this is good for 5 years. With this stamp she can apply for a PPS number and start working. Note the stamp only allows work in Ireland. It only takes a few mins to get.

After 3 years she can apply to become an irish citizen.

    Hope this helps.

    Yes thanks!
It appears that different states have their own policies regarding work permits for wives of EU citizens. She'll be able to work in France for instance.

Hi there. Was interested in the subject matter because I find myself in a similar situation, though on the other side of the pond. My boyfriend is an Irishman, and while we want to get married eventually, were hoping to get to live in the same country first. Due to the strict rules associated with obtaining a work permit, it looks like we may just be taking the plunge early.

Has your fiancee lived in Ireland before? If so, was she able to obtain a work permit? I find being American to be a liability on this front, if nothing else, than due to the ever growing EU. It sounds on the surface of things that you've had to endure some of the same long distance relationship pains that we have. Would be interested in any tips you may have to expedite the process of getting to be near one another for once and for all!

    Best of luck to you!

Either get married in Northern Ireland or in the USA and then live in Ireland. Register as a resident alien as described above. Everything will be ok.
