OK, maybe someone out there is experienced in the ways of getting to Munich...
    I'm going there for Oktoberfest.
We were gonna fly over, which costs £240 return.
Then we decided to find a cheaper way...
So far we have a cabin on a ferry going to Cherbourg in France (this cost £12 each, theres 4 of us going).
Ok, now i have to figure out how to get from Cherbourg to Munich.
I am open to suggestions smile.gif
does anyone know a good website for doing this?
we want to get there on trains or buses.

    help please biggrin.gif

would you believe I've been looking at doing something similar!

    have a look at www.germany-tourism.de

I requested some information on driving around germany and they sent quite a large info pack which included a lot of info on rail travel.

    Very helpful smile.gif

Eh, make sure you also have somewhere to stay, not sure what dates teh 'fest is this year, but camping may be out of the question.

couldnt get that URL to work frown.gif

its £171 return through Usit this october...
so we might just end up doing that.
But going on a train across France seemed more adventurous smile.gif
And the Ferry company is Irish Ferries, and in fact its actually gonna be 55 quid each to get to France because one of my friends couldnt read properly smile.gif I dont mind that though, just getting from France to Munich that bothers me...

Does anyone know what the deal is with accommodation there? Is there many campsites around or should i book it well in advance?

    Cheers

You can probably get a through ticket from CIE tours in Abbey Street (between O'Connell Street and the Irish Life Centre). You would probably pay much more on a series of individual tickets.

Apparently there is a very good deal for Students in Germany for using local express trains at the weekend for a very low price (the Happy Weekend Ticket - 5 people, any journey DM 40 = £16), but it might take 6 trains to get from Dusseldorf to Munich.

    For Germany:

    http://www.bahn.de/

    http://www.bahn.de/pv/uebersicht/die_bahn_international_guests.shtml

The site will even check which bus you should use at the other end. However, be prepared to have to change trains 2 - 3 times.

    For France:

In October? You want to go camping? Try hostelling - look for a guide book in Easons or the like "Let's Go" or the like. Any accommodation is likely to be very expensive at Karnival / Messe times in Germany. Try booking up to a year in advance. (Serious)

Please note for the internet in Germany, if you have an Ümlaut (the two dots over a vowel) replace it with that letter followed by "e", e.g. Köln (real name) = Koeln (internet name)

Does USIT not have a package for this? Assuming you're a student, or a youngfella/one of course...

cos it lasts 2 weeks, and it ends on the first sunday in October. So it just depends what date the first sunday falls on...

I got to Osnabruck for a tenner... you might not like this plan though.

    (1) Find a trucker. One of your mates will know someone who knows someone who knows someone etc etc etc.

    (2) Ask trucker if he or one of his associates is going to Munich.

    (3) Arrange meeting with said individual.

    (4) The tricky part - getting a lift. You might have to pay a little, but truckers generally appreciate the conversation as it stops them steering 40 tonnes into oncoming traffic.

The only problem is you'll be going quite a few days without sleep, as truckers seem to drive 24/7.

Plus you should bring currency for every country you pass through, so you can buy food.

(guess who forgot to think of that)

That said, it's an adventure and will leave you with plenty of money for the beerfest ;-)

Failing that; look into interrailing. Also, Ryanair do cheap flights from Shannon to Frankfurt.
