    the dogs stand
    steel-eyed
    twitching and dripping and waiting.
    their tails shake,
    like poised snakes,
    pacing and howling and barking.

    we can't leave,
    we can't run,
    we'd never make the gate.
    we'll just hide ,
    in our hay house,
    and curl up together and wait.
