    Found on the overclockers.co.uk forums...
We would like to inform you that on Monday, July 26th, 2004, prices will decrease for ALL AMD Athlon™ 64 processors, from model numbers 2800+ up to 3800+.
Please note that AMD Athlon 64 FX processors will not be affected by this price move.

In addition, on Monday 9th August, prices will increase for AMD Athlon XP processors, from model numbers 2800+ up to 3200+.
There’s never been a better time to move to AMD64 processors; step into the future…

:D Better be more than a fiver drop!
    Nyom nyom.

There are too many XPs being sold and not enough A64s, seems pretty reasonable, considering XPs were too cheap to begin with.

    Where on the forum?
    Is Socket 939 included?

I'll probably look more towards a 939 3500. Was looking at a 3000/3200 and o/cing it up, I figure the 3500 gives me a solid 939 platform, which means when I want to upgrade the processor, I won't really need a new mobo. Wonder how well they overclock though. I should be able to afford my (Long-awaited) new rig in 4-5 weeks, so this price drop is just right (here's hoping they drop enough! :D).

More than likely, the only people who'll see any major difference are the big 'channel' customers.

AMDs price drop will be in selling lots of 1000 chips to resellers, it'll take a little while for the drop from AMD to filter through to the customer.

although I notice a 190 differnce between overclockers and komplett for - AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz Socket 939, 512KB cache, BOXED
    unless I'm missing something :ninja:

There is a similar differance between Kompleet and jes., ........so maybe the prices have dropped.

    this is great........

for people who haven't bought one yet

I've got a 3200+ 64bit 1mb cache. Best thing I ever bought. I thoroughly recommend the 3200 and 3400. The others are far too overpriced for what they are.

Yeah but i was wondering where I can but an a64 3500+ for $346 or its equivilent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,149 ✭✭✭✭Lemming

    I'm eyeballing that 3500+ :D

I'd love a 1mb cache socket 939 chip (ie. an FX53, but .. eh ... that's not going to happen at that price)

  • Moderators Posts: 5,580 ✭✭✭Azza

On socket 754 I have to say at those prices the 3400 takes over from the 3200 as price performance ratio king. I would whole heartly recommend it :)

this is great news, but i think the price drops will take at least 3 or 4 weeks to really take effect as suppliers will want to sell their stock of the AMD64's bought at the old stock price at the old RRP before droping in price by a good bit.

anyways, taking the new prices from lynchie into account, i though i'd adjust two price/performance tables done by PC Perspective to see which of the CPUs is worth buying and which is still a waste of money for what one pays in relation to the performance benefits. as we all know, no matter how much extra L2 cache or other nifty bits and bobs a processor has, it's as only good as it performs in the system.

all the CPUs were tested on pretty much the same rig bar the motherboard (different sockets), but otherwise the same RAM (2 x 512MB DDR DRAM), GPU (ATI Radeon 9800XT), ATI Catalyst 3.10 drivers etc.

    UT2003 @ 1024x768x32 CPU Price/Performance comparison
    Avg. FPS Price Price/FPS
    Athlon 64 FX-53 336.5 $827 $2.45
    Athlon 64 3800+ 335.1 $643 $1.91
    Athlon 64 3500+ not tested $346 $?.??
    Athlon 64 3400+ 333.3 $288 $0.86
    Athlon 64 3200+ 329.7 $227 $0.68
    Athlon 64 3000+ 321.2 $189 $0.58
    Athlon 64 2800+ 312.2 $173 $0.55

Content Creation Winstone 2004 CPU Price/Performance comparison
    Score Price Price/Score
    Athlon 64 FX-53 37.8 $827 $21.87
    Athlon 64 3800+ 37.3 $643 $17.23
    Athlon 64 3500+ not tested $346 $?.??
    Athlon 64 3400+ 35 $288 $8.22
    Athlon 64 3200+ 32.4 $227 $7.00
    Athlon 64 3000+ 31.2 $189 $6.05
    Athlon 64 2800+ 29.4 $173 $5.88

judging from the above, it is clear that unless one has money to throw around, buying into the high-costing AMD64 CPUs is ridiculous. a top graphics card (i.e. ATI Radeon 9800XT), plenty of RAM and a good motherboard are much better buys in terms of performance gain in a new 64bit system. the Athlon 64 3000+ and the Athlon 64 3200+ (the 3200+ with 2.2GHz and 512kb L2 cache not the older one with 2.0GHz and 1MB L2 cache) are the best performing price/performance wise and can keep up with the higher-end AMD64s having read numerous articles, not just based on the above table.

some 2 years ago i spent way over 300 Euro on a now very low-end Athlon XP 2200+ and looking at it now, i'd have more than happily spent half as much and bought a much better GPU. that's what i'll be doing in preparation for Doom3, getting either a AMD A64 3000+ or AMD A64 3200+ and a very nice GPU to boot.

Well from pricewatch.com there are US retailers selling at $346 (~€286)

Cheapeast in the UK is Komplett or OCUK at £250 (~€377)

Cheapest in yoyos is Komplett at €389 (Jes.de is actually more expensive at €409)

Well I suppose it answers my earlier thread about whether or not to go for an AMD64! mad about town they're some proce drops, just checked the prices in euros, E239 for 3400+, that's impressive considering that currently komplett.ie are charging E234 for the 3200+.

For once I was patient and it looks like it paid off, it works out even better now that I still had to wait another few weeks before the funds for the new system would have been raised, if I'd have had the money now it would have been burning a hole in my pocket.

Looks like I'll be able to lash together a good system for under E600, now that komplett are doing 200GB hard drives for 129 quid :)

Didn't know they were that cheap! I'm thinking of a new drive all of a sudden... :D
