    Looks like Tony is going to name Peter Mandelson as the UK's commissioner !!!!

    Looks like having to resign twice has done him no harm. Ah well onto the European gravy train for another bluffer.

    Well Gandalf, I don't necessarily think what Mandelson resigned over before was criminally serious. Okay so there was a conflict of interest issue pertaining to his owing a debt to Paymaster-General Robinson while his Department was investigating the latter, but he resigned fairly quickly into that investigation. The European Parliament has a tough scrutinising procedure whererby the nominees for Commissionerships have to go through rigorous vetting-committees, and that should help ensure new Commissioners don't have similar conficts-of-interest before the European Parliament votes on their nominations. It is notable that the British PM doesn't have to subject ministerial appointments to parliamentary scrutiny, since he can just use the archaic royal prerogative to appoint them.
