Wet DVD lens cleaner

I've got 4 DVD drives - 2 in each machine. The older machine has a DVD/CR+RW combo drive. It now only works as a CD. My newest DVD drive is the only only one that will read all readable disks. The two other drives will read after a few goes of the dry lens cleaner - but not everything the newer drive will do. I suspect this is because I smoke in my flat and it is the yukky build-up on the lens that causes these problems.

I've seen places (none here - mainly in the states) that stock wet DVD lens cleaners. If no one does them here, is there a catch with them - i.e. they kill the drive sooner or later or something.

Has anyone tried one of these? If so what were the results? or is the jury still out?

I had a similar problem recently. The CD Writer would read perfectly all the time but wouldn't burn at all. I upgraded the firmware and it's worked flawlessly since. Give it a shot. It won't cost you anything anyway.

I tried a firware upgrade on one of the drives and it came with lot's of warnings: basically this could fry your drive. When I ran it - it failed - I thought my drive was screwed. It still works. The fact that the problem drives work better after a dry-cleaning - makes me believe the problem is really just the lens.
