GAC to decide Mullane’s fate a week before semi

    By John Murphy
THE suspension of Waterford hurler John Mullane for the All-Ireland semi-final won’t be determined until the Games Administration Committee’s next meeting on Sunday week.

Waterford County Board had expected an official GAC response this week to its representations on behalf of Mullane, who is set to serve a one-month suspension and a one-match ban - the August 8 All-Ireland semi-final - following his red card dismissal in last month’s Munster final against Cork.

The letter from the Waterford board was among a sizeable amount of correspondence the GAC was unable to deal with at its meeting last Monday, and the matter was deferred to its next meeting on August 1.

The Waterford chairman, Paddy Joe Ryan, said yesterday that while they would have preferred the GAC to have dealt with the Mullane issue last Monday, they fully accept the GAC’s explanation as to why it was not.

“We are still hopeful of a favourable response to our representations, which purely and simply make the point that the one-match ban on John Mullane should apply to the Munster championship and not the All-Ireland semi- final,” Ryan said.

“We are confident we will be given a fair hearing, but beyond that we just don’t know,” he added.

Delegates at last Monday night’s county board meeting were forceful in calling on the board to back any legal move by Mullane.

Mr Ryan added: “There is a hardening of attitude behind the player. More and more supporters are insistent that under the wording of the GAC’s own statement, a player will stand suspended for the next match ‘in that competition’. In Mullane’s case that has to be the next first round game in the Munster championship.”

Ryan said he would not comment on talk of a High Court action before the GAC decision.

“We will look at it when that decision is delivered and only then will we decide what next, if anything, we can or will do,” he said.

However, a senior GAA source warned there was never any distinction between championships in the area of suspension.
