Dodgy IDE Cable: how do i check

Basically, i had terrible harddrive troubles, and lost data twice on my harddrive. I RMA'ed it to komplett, who tested it, and sent it back. I'm resonably satisified that they tested it enough, but am not satisifed that the drive is 100% ok.

If the drive is ok, the only other thing that could have made the harddrive lose the data would be the IDE cable.

I had my "dodgy" 160gb connected in as the slave drive, and my windows HD (an 80gb) connected in as the master. There is absoluteyl nothing wrong with the master drive, so is it possible that the slave connector is dodgy? And if so, how can i check?

    how do you check????
well id start with getting another ide cable, one that i know is working, and putting it in place of the suspect one. its the easieast and quickest way if you have a spare.

it happened to me before and i hadnt a clue what was goin on for a while, lucky i had a spare hard disk or two and they turned out to be dodgy when i hooked them to the same ide

i suppose what i could do is switch the cable with the one on my DVD-RW. the master thing on the "dodgy" cable works fine, and i only have one optical drive, so it'll work fine there.

when i had the dodgy ide, i cant remember all symptoms, but one thing that was very distincive was the hard kept coming up as funny letters in the bios. instead of maxtor49857 blah whatever it's supposed to be, it was all like %á#Å¥. sometimes it came up right, but other times it didnt. same with other disks i tried

Actually, that did happen to me. I assumed it was because i had master/slave incorrectly set up. Right, that cable is going in the bin as soon as i can get a replacement.
