This could make all the difference for people , on or planning to go to UTV . its a pity its been kept so quiet , might have alleviated (thank god for spellchecker) some of the frustration experienced . Too late for me though .

    from newsgroup this morning :::

As Charles stated, an upgrade of our bandwidth is imminent.

We've been in discussions with all the major transport providers over the
last 2 or 3 months, but moving an entire ISP of our size to an alternative
provider is no small matter and unfortunately takes time.

If everything is finally agreed on Friday with our preferred supplier then
we will be looking at an approximate 2 weeks to get fibre installed and
routers shoe-horned in and configured. We'll pass on more details as we get
    something more concrete.

    Carl.

    at last, a response!

it would be lovely if they got their network moved to a decent provider alright.
(i have about 8 months left on my contract) So what're the odds of something getting utterly shafted during this upgrade/move? :)

For teh fools like me, explain in plain english!

does this mean they are setting uyp there own network (very expensive i would have thought) or what?

and does this mean they will have more control over caps speeds etc??

Fairly self-explanatory, if you ask me. They're changing wholesaler, presumably to get better performance, and more control. This will give them increased resilience on their backhaul, but I don't expect to see much, if any change, at my end - their access product will still be Eircon RADSL resold.

The problem isn't Eircom, it's UTV's bandwidth provider (NevadaTele?). So if they ditch Nevada and go with someone decent we (the end customers) should be seeing a huge improvement, especially in ping times.

There's still an awful lot of of ifs and buts though when you read Carl's post through.

And dare I say it but is this possible move not an admission on UTV's part that those of us who have been critical of them might have had a point or indeed several of them?

"Boggling" is a very good word........................ Clicksilver back again now....... could it be related to the IOL BB issue in the other thread here ?

availability is actually one area where i've had no problems at all with Clicksilver since i joined it about 4 months ago - its only ever been down for me at scheduled times.

but the pings, oh the pings - they have actually been worse than 56k pings for the last month.

That coupled with the fact that it has been completely ignored by UTV is the most infuriating part . It is completely unusable for games between the hours of 7pm til 12 midnight almost everynight .

Glad to hear they are doing something about this. It's pretty woeful having the same RADSL product but 3-8 times everyone else's pings on an irish server :)

Here's hoping they solve it, it's the only mar on an otherwise excellent service from a customer-friendly ISP.

*bump* any news? (posted this on the newsgroup aswell before anyone else mentions it...but its friday so just wondering if anyone's heard anything...)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭ArthurG

Pings seem to have improved dramatically last night.

Correction - according to newsgroup they dis-improved later on.....

    Sigh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,411 ✭✭✭jonski

Pings were actually unbelievable last night for the most part , once or twice they went high for a short period , maybe 10 mins or a bit more , but other than that they were great .

First nights gaming in a long time , hopefully this is the start of the come back for UTV , too late for me but there you have it . i get the feeling their pings might still be higher than the main two but if they can get them stable it shouldn't be that big a problem , remember they are a tenner cheaper .

Given that good pings seem to be the norm with other providers surely it cannot be that difficult to provide them? Does anyone know what causes bad pings? It seems strange to me that they appear to deteriorate more or less at a particular time but the fact that this happens would suggest that the cause should be easier to track down?

forget the ping story above , back in the 200's now :(
