X woes

The computer i am attempting to dual boot linux on on has no problems with Xfree86 on the various live cds floating about. However after I install these live cds (using knoppix-installer) X refuses to start correctly. It gives me a black and white screen with an X for a mouse pointer and just sits there. I have to do [ctrl][alt] 1 to get my prompt back. There seems to be no significant error messages in the logs.

Ive tryed Knoppix and Knoppix STD as well as Gentoo and Damn small linux. Ive even tryed copying the X config file from the live cd to no avail.

I can't see to find anything helpful on google. Can anyone point me to a good site for trouble shooting (or just plain shooting) X?

    Cheers

X is working fine. What you need to do is get a windowmanager to run.

For the easy way out, try running gdm or kdm. They give options of running various windowmanager.

Or else, edit your .xinitrc in your home directory and stick in a windowmanger there. ie startkde, exec fluxbox etc.
I think it needs to be executable, not certain.
Whatever you have installed, if you have anything installed !

But when I run the x window manager flux box come up as normal!

How do you run X ? you need to do startx, if you aren't already.

Okay. Upon startup I get the message(from memory)
"Not starting X display manager (xdm) it is not the default display manager"
when I login and go super user and run 'xdm' I then get my grahpical login.

So I changed a config file in the /etc dir (i think it was xinitrc or similar, it was in one of the rc dirs)
It was something along the lines of "ignore default display manager = false"

    I changed that to true.

Insted of the "Not starting X disply manager.. " message I get a message saying it started it correctly. But I still have to load call xdm to get any X stuff up.

Now maybe I'm misunderstanding how X works, but should I not get my graphical login screen before/insted of logginin into the shell then issuing 'xdm'.

I typed all this from memory. Ive a feeling i'm interchanging some commands or have the wrong ones listed here.
