I heard that this might be happening. Anyone know for definite? Saw them two years ago and they were terrific. Would make my summer to see them again.

Several people have said this to me and SY are touring Europe in late August so I think it just may well be true.

I saw them two years ago too and I was disappointed. But I really like the new album (I wasn't huge on the previous ones) so I'm hoping it'll be a better gig.

It should be the white stripes supporting sonic youth, not the other way round!

    Ill pretend I didn't hear that :)

Sonic Youth are definitely supporting the white stripes tho.

Think its completely bizarre the gig is on a Tuesday and starts at 2.30pm. Even finishing work and heading straight there I'll basically be paying 55 yoyos to see the White Stripes on their own. MCD at it again, some organisers!

If we're really lucky they'll sell us the times the bands are playing at for a tenner!

There's a lot of bands freed up from the cancellation of lollapalooza, sonic youth included. I'd love to seem them again (have seen them twice before), but not at an outdoor festival where they aren't the main act..

I agree but at the end of the day it's all about the money, and right now the White Stripes pull the bigger crowd. I was going to buy a ticket today but 60 bills is a lot just to see sonic youth. And at a gig like that the sound will probably be pretty bad. They were rad in the olympia a few years ago but I saw them play in New York four years ago and they were amazing. It was the last show of their tour but unfortunately the only one stereolab were not doing support for.

TBH there was no way I would have paid 60 bills to see the White Stripes again but I'm more than prepared to let MCD rape me for the chance to see Sonic Youth.

Saw Sonic Youth about 2 months ago in England. Only 2000 at the gig, right up the front. THey were pretty good, but a goos bit of new stuff.

Met Thurston (who was sound) and Kim (who was a right dry b1tch). She was with Vincent Gallo (scary looking actor/musician) so maybe that had something to do with it.

Met Kim here before and made a spa out of myself, just didnt know what to say and she didnt say much either. I had a camera in my bag but didnt remember till after I had left.

According to the forums on the Sonic Youth site, that ad. was (somehow) a mis-print, they're not playing :(
I'll post the links, also the offical tour dates on the site haven't been changed since the 15th and there's no mention of them playing here.

    Edit: Links

A load of cock might be more entertaining (referring to cock of the chicken variety of course)

this is not right, whit stripes, are a ****ing phase.
    sonic youth are icons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I wouldn't call them a phase but I do think in a few years they are going to be forgotten by a lot of people. But for a band with four albums of strong material I think it's a bit much to call them a phase.

The white stripes have 4 albums of strong material. Sonic youth have lots of albums of ****e material with a fame based on tenuous connections to nirvana. Snore.

The tenuous connection being that Cobain would be nowhere without the likes of Sonic Youth. They are art where Nirvana are pop. In my opinion Sonic Youth are one of the most important rock bands ever (even if I don't like all of their stuff). They're one of the very few groups that can go from straight forward rock music to all out experimentalism in a matter of minutes. They are still putting out good albums at a rate of knots after over 20 years.

Ok i won't even debate the comment about their albums but to say their fame is based mostly upon connection with nirvana is crazy, are you one of these guys who has to trace back everything american early 90's to nirvana ?
