NTL in Lucan problems

Anyone in the Lucan area having problems connecting to their broadband. After rebooting serveral times I got an IP address which appears to be valid. However, I cannot ping anything.

Is there any network settings in XP pro that can prevent you from connecting. I did setup a home network in order to connect a laptop for file transfer, about a week ago, but could still access the net afterwards. I not sure whether this problem is due to the fact that it was rebooted at the weekend.

    ANY help would be lads.

    Thanks.

Well firstly, check your network setup - are your machines getting an ip address from your router's built in DHCP? or are they static? Either way, make sure that you can ping the router from all machines.
If you can't, then your problem is on your side, fix your ip addresses.

Step 2 is to try to ping your dns servers. check your router to see what dns servers it's being given by NTL's DHCP system. try to ping those from your computer. Also, make sure that your computer's gateway and DNS are both set to the ip of your router. If they are, and you can ping the NTL DNS server, then the problem is with their system.

Step 3 Manually setup your router to use a DNS server from this page -> http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~zoro/dns.html
I'm not sure how up to date it is, but some of them should work ;) If still no joy, setup your computer to use the router as your gateway, but one of those address as your DNS.

If there's STILL no joy, ring NTL and scream at a regular, non-stop, extremely irritatingly high pitch until a non-pleb talks to you :)

    Thanks zoro for the reply.

I should have mentioned though that the laptop network setup was only a tempory thing. It's gone now. I have an eternet cable mobem conneted to my onboard network slot. No other computers/routers etc.

I brought my machine downstairs at the weekend to watch some movies on the big screen. I brought it back up on Monday, reconnecting all the cables etc. Whilst doing that the computer fell on its side and made a noise like "bang"

But as I said, I can see an valid IP / DHCP / GATEWAY address when I plug/unplug my modem. Is there an internal IP address to diagnose the cable modem, or see the settings ?

    Thanks

You mean your modem has a screen, keyboard and mouse? :) How do you know it's getting valid info?

I don't have NTL so maybe they use really high-tech hardware ;)

Regarding internal ip: Read up on your router's manual, it'll give you the default ip adress for it, which is probably either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Depending on which one it is, your machine will need to be on the same subnet, which means:
    Router: 192.168.0.1
Your PC: 192.168.0.* -- Where * is any number from 2 to 254

    Router: 192.168.1.1
Your PC: 192.168.1.* -- Where * is any number from 2 to 254

    You get me?

The IP is bound to your network card, not to your modem (although potatoes, potatoes).

If your computer is telling you your IP address is 127.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x or between 172.16.x.x - 172.32.x.x (yes, confusing isn't it), then you're not getting a valid IP address from NTL.

Go into the Control Panel > Network & Dial-Up Connections > (Network connection name). Set everything to automatic. Restart your computer and your modem.

but that'll be useless if his router's DHCP is disabled - and we haven't determined if he can reach his router at the moment.

As he dropped his machine while moving it, it may also be a hardware issue, not completely likely, but a possibility.

His router's internal interface must be on the same subnet as his pc or he won't get anything anyway :)

Use *'s to mask your ip in future - it's not safe to post it on a public board :) Edit your previous post, or turn your modem off and on again to get a new ip.

What's the DNS info you're getting?

OK, sounds like a valid IP.

Let's see where your connection is dying.

Start > Run... > Type "cmd"

Type "tracert www.boards.ie" and paste the results up here.
