Damn CPU socket numbers

I was thinking of getting a faster cpu, but the first hurdle hit me, what bloody number do I have to get?

I looked around and the majority of chips with the same speed as my current one (1.6ghz Intel 4) have a 478 socket, do I have to use the same number, or can I use the higher ones like the 754 (which appear to be AMD only), is there even a difference? I would like to get an AMD for obvious reasons.

AMD64's also use Socket 754, depend on which AMD 64 you get..

Don't forget that there is a speed limit on your motherboard, i.e. you probably can't just bung a 3.2 GHZ in there.
Check what motherboard you have and then look it up on the manufacturer's website.
It will tell you the pin configuration, the max bus speed and the max processor speed.

just get a new mobo too

Your motherboard will most likely only do up to a 400MHz FSB. All the 478 CPUs these days come in 533MHz FSB or 800MHz FSB. You may be able to find a 2.4GHz 400MHz FSB CPU if you're lucky though.

There are Celerons available at 2.8GHz on a 400MHz FSB. Do not buy one. You will be very disappointed in the performance.

Assuming you want this machine for games, get a Socket 754 motherboard based on the NForce3 250 chipset and an Athlon 64 CPU such as the 3000 or 3200. You'll also need some new RAM most likely. This kit will run you about €400 to €550 depending on the board and RAM you choose.

Again assuming a games machine you might want a new graphics card. The Radeon 9800Pro is a great card for a great price of around €220.

Again if you get all this gear you might need a better PSU from a good manufacturer of at least 350 Watts. Cost roughly €60

Im pretty sure Zakalwe is right, its relativly old and the front serial bus is probably 400 mega hertz.

    Will try your suggestions anyway

Pity it's a willy because the 1.6 northwoods overclock to between 2.2-2.5 normally.

The willamette would be lucky to get an extra 100mhz.

Time for a mobo upgrade then too eh? If you go to 800mhz fsb you will probably need new ram then too. Ah the joys of upgrading.

If you can pick up a 400mhz Northwood somewhere then you might not need that upgrade just yet.

This wee chart might prove useful ;)

Toms hardware guide won't let you link to pictures. I got caught by that myself before. Any7 chance of a link to the page that image is on?

If you stick a GET string on to the end of the URL the server will let you link it directly. This should work:

    (THG) CPU History

Going slighty off topic here but that GET string works fine in IE5 but I get shot down in Firefox 9.2.....I just a the tomshardware logo with Firefox.:dunno:

The GET string should only kick in server side. It must be caching. It works fine in Firefox for me.
