Just bought a 200gig drive and the pc only picks up 127gigs
its a bios problem im 99% sure
thing is if i get an external hd case and hook it up by usb will the 200 gigs get recognised ?
Also if there are no bios upgrades available (which there
aint) is there any possible workaround 4 this problem

    What OS?

If its XP, make sure you have SP1, then go to your drive manufacturers webpage and look for something like "big drive enabler" or google for that tool.

That sets windows to be able to use the full capacity. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE SP1 OR YOU WILL REGRET IT.

    What motherboard do you have?

If you really stuck it might be helpful to do a bit of research on "Enhanced Bios Expansion Cards":
    http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/bios/overCards-c.html
I think this could be one of the neater ways of handling it; and possibly less risky than a flash job.

I think there's also something called ezbios or something like that; which tackles the problem at a software level; definetly more risky than a hardware solution though a few years back i knew someone who used it to get a 486 to recognise a 1+ gig drive.

    Who makes your drive?

If you go to the manufacturers website you'll prob see the answer int he faq. There is usually a small file u install.

(for maxtor its big drive enabler which i use).

Other method is to buy an ide controller card (i presume its ide?)

Gives us the name of the manufactuter and model and im sure myself or someone here will have a look into it for ya.

Some of the external enclosures, USB and FW can't handle large drives either so check that before you buy. Alternatives, are the software fixes, bios upgrades, or a new HD controller card, either IDE or ATA.

I had trouble like this with Win2k. It was the fuppin' horrors. I had fdisk'd the drive with win98, so it recognised the full drive size, but when I read or wrote beyond the 127GB point, the machine went belly up.

Eventually found out that you need to manually edit the registry to fix it. enableBigLBA or something like that.`

    Found it.....

Maxtors tool will work with any drive. Its just a generic tool that edits the registry, not a drive specific thing. I linked it, but that post seems to be gone....
