Identify the cartoon...

...from my extremely hazy memory

Right, it was a cartoon, probably early 90s. It featured 4 or 5 robots (who could fly, I think) of different colours. There was a red one, a green one and so on. Anyway, I can remember one particular shot, which I presume happened in most episodes, of them flying through the air, and armour flying towards them from various directions, attaching itself to their bodies.

Was there also one, or the is this the same cartoon where they where like robot lions and tigers and then they all joined up into this big mega robot.

I Remember the toys and my friend had them but i can't remember what they where called.
