i know a few of ye have mention ger canning before. but what about jim carnew ?

his commenting is annoying and his interviews are worse, his questions go on and on and on and are normally like a short storey.

I think Micheal O'Muircheartaigh (sp) has such a high standard for commentary (albeit on the radio) it's hard to take the Cannings, Morriseys and Carneys of the world seriously. The scary thing though is that O'Muircheartaigh is in his seventies although I stand to be corrected and as a result you would imagine there aren't too many years left in him. What then for commentary?

Anyone else remember when he was the young buck apprentice to O Hehirs skillful rants? That kind of commentating will pass when MOM retires I am afraid.

i like ger canning and his commentary.

Used to prefer when he was teamed up with Cyril "hes done it again ger " farrell.

better then dry arsed michael duignan. they may not be accurate lets face it but there is more passion + the hint of humour during a game

    Hahaha. Good Old Cyril.

2002 Munster Final. Paul Flynn about to take *that* free. No talk from either commentator beforehand about the possibility of him going for goal. Paul thumps it to the back of the net - Cue Cyril "He went for it Ger, he went for it"

wouldnt like o muirtearthaigh. bit of a know all especially on hurling which Kerry know little or nothing about

Of course any of the Tipp Fans will explain to you the genius of the legend that is PADDY FINUCANE!!!!!!
Hop Hop Hop and over the sideline.

Was it not Liam Griffin who talked about "Santy"?

    Ger Canning is absolutely useless.

No it was Cyril last yr. I think griffin is gone since 2000 or 2001. Griffins most famous for "theres only one DJ, Ger".

Ger isnt accurate but god bless his enthusiasm.

As far as co commentators go I find Cork's Tomas Mulcahy to be the fairest.
Heres a few GAA quotes from Pat Spillane & guests.
“They have a forward line that couldn’t punch holes in a paper bag” - Pat Spillane on the Cavan team.

"Davey Forde wouldn’t be a free-taker if you boiled him in a pot” - Tom Ryan after the 1999 Munster Final, where Forde missed a tap-over free with five minutes to go.

“We’re taking this match awful seriously. We’re training three times a week now, and some of the boys are off the beer since Tuesday” - An Offaly hurler quoted in the week before an All-Ireland final.

“Football is a game for those not good enough to play hurling” - Tony Wall.

“Hurling is the Riverdance of sport” - Liam Griffin.

“Ger Loughnane was fair, he treated us all the same during training ... like dogs” - Anonymous Clare hurler.

“Any chance of an autograph, its for the wife. She really hates you.” - Tipp fan to Ger Loughnane.
“I’m not giving away any secrets like that to Tipp. If I had my way I wouldn’t even tell them the time for the throw in” - Ger Loughnane on his controversial selection policy.
“I say nothing but I never stop talking” - Ger Loughnane on his interviews with the media.
“The GAA is an amateur association run by professionals. The FAI is a professional body run by amateurs” - Fan during the Roy Keane saga.
“Pat Fox has it on his hurl and is motoring well now .. but here comes Joe Rabitte hot on his tail. I’ve seen it all now - a rabbit chasing a fox around Croke Park” - Michael O’Muircheartaigh.
“You can’t win derbies with donkeys” - Babs Keating before Tipp played Cork in 1990.
“Sheep in a heap” - Babs Keating’s description of Offaly in 1998.
“Babs Keating ‘resigned’ as coach because of illness and fatigue. The players were sick and tired of him” - an Offaly fan in 1998.
“And as for you, you’re not even good enough to play for this shower of useless no-hopers” - Former Clare mentor to one of his subs after a heavy defeat.

“Babs Keating was arrested in Nenagh for shaking a cigarette machine but the Gardai let him off when he said he only wanted to borrow twenty players” - Waterford fan after 2002 Munster final.

“Meath players like to get their retaliation in first” - Cork fan in 1998.

“Meath make football a colourful game - you get all black and blue” - Another Cork fan in 1998.

“Colin Corkery is deceptive. He is slower than he looks” - Kerry fan.

“Life isn’t all beer and football. Some of us haven’t touched a football in months” - Kerry player during a League campaign in the 1980s.

“Fermanagh has such a small playing base. Half the county is made up of water and half of those living in the remaining half are protestants” - Fermanagh man bemoans the paucity of talent in the county

Well if we're getting into local radio then Midland's Radio 3 really must get a mention. D'Unbelievables are nothing on this lot.
