new to quake3?

[Recently there have been a few people on IRC asking questions about Q3, patches, mods, maps etc. so I thought I’d put a quick list of useful links together. Maybe some moderator can make this a sticky? Any other good advice from the regulars would be great too.]


Below is a quick list of useful links if you’re starting out in the online world of Quake3. Any file you download will (should) have a ‘readme.txt’. Normally, reading this will answer any setup questions you have… if not, post a new thread/question here, or over on http://www.quake.ie. Good stuff, I was thinking of reinstalling Quake3... how's the Q3 scene going these days?
Last time I was playing it seemed pretty dead, pub servers empty, not much action happening at all.
Is it just limited to pickups or otherwise pre-arranged matches or can you still jump on a server and start fragging?

fairly dead at the moment, was going well a few months ago... you could spark a mini revival if you got one or two people to come onto the servers with you a couple of nights in a row, others would join and it could easily turn into a regular thing

common channel commands
!add - add your name to the list.
!remove - remove your name from the list.
!lastgame - details of last game: who added, what server, time game was called.
!q3 server:port - current game info from server:port.

You could be waiting anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes before a pickup list gets full.
