My first ever specimen sized fish, caught sat morning at around 8am on double sweetcorn on the bottom. Just checked and a 2 1/4lb fish is specimen size, well pleased. Thought it was a small tench but it was fighting oddly, pity these don't grow bigger as this 2 1/2lb one put up a good fight :)

Congrats - fabulous fish & in great condition too.

The water looks superb.....don't suppose you want to share its whereabouts ?? :)

Its the Castle Lake in Rossmore Park Monaghan, its controlled by the Rossmore Coarse Angling Club. Had 7 tench after the Rudd, 1 small one (2lb), 1 good one (4lb) and 5 between 5lb and 5lb 10oz :)

Nice Rudd BoN but what really suprises me is that you caught a heap of tench on a sunny morning after 8am. Id normally be dreading the sun climbing higher on a dawn session. That said Ive often Blanked out on "ideal" morning conditions.

I fished one of those lakes in Rossmore 5-6 years ago, caught nowt though the tench were fizzing mad and knocking me line about. Fish corn, maggots and even rolled some stones to use worms. Still Its a beautiful park with nice surrounding to fish by. Heard roumers that one of the lakes once held Carp.

i had the rudd and the smallest tench before 9am, then nothing for 3hrs, was about to pack it up for the day when the first of my big tench took my bait, from that it was basically a tench every cast or 2 for about an hour and a half, till it when quiet again, we packed up around 2:30pm. I'd put alot of ground bait (bread crumb/ground hemp) in and lots of loose bait (sweetcorn/hemp seed) so when the fish did enter the swim they started to feed like mad things. I also knew that there was a fishing compo on sunday, and the club had been out clearing the swims, so plenty of natural food kicked up to help the fish get in the mood to feed. The tench are normally quite shy there as its well fished but theres some big ones and thats what I was there for. Heres the best of the tench.

I've had all my best tench this year between 10:00hrs and 13:00hrs. Odd, but thats the way its been. The sun was in and out and there were a few showers, the water was also quite warm. Very glad I didn't pack up at 12:00 and had those few final casts :)

The CFB stocked a few of the lakes there with Carp in the 70's (i think) but nothing much has been seen of them since apparently. No one seems to know what happened to them.

Not sure where you're based Nog, but would welcome a chance to go fishing one day....been at the game for 30 years now (only 39 lol), but always looking to learn from others.

Hey, maybe we should start a boards fishing club ??

Something I've thought about many times....make it a central meet (or as close as) and follow it with a boards beers.....

Mullingar is fairly central. And we've got a huge choice of places to fish around there.

Mullingar is fine for me.....so long as you don't bring Joe Dolan along..
