IE Problem

Grateful for any advice on this one.

Whenever I enter an URL into my address bar e.g. www.boards.ie it prevents me from bringing up the page. A message comes up "Cannot find ‘www.boards.ie’. Make sure the path or internet address is correct."

However, when I enter it as http://www.boards.ie, the webpage comes up no problem.

This has just started happening in the last couple of days.

very simple answer . forget ie ! it`s full of holes . get forefox at http://update.mozilla.org/?application=firefox.

Get Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de/) and Spybot (http://security.kolla.de/) and see if they detect + remove anythying.

sorry for the facetious answer but i could`nt resist . another very useful tool is this!!http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.htm
it stops any spyware or adware from being installed on your browser and also blocks bad sites. spybot search and destroy also works with this and even recommends it !!

Generally when IE buggers itself like that, the only way to fix it is to reinstall windows. The reason is that it is built in to the OS, and so you cant just delete it and reinstall it. Thats why i would also recommend an alternative browser (be it Firefox, Netscape, Opera or whatever).

If Spybot doesn't remove spyware and fix the problem, try manually reinstalling the last internet explorer service pack to see if that will fix the corrupt files.

I had run Ad-Aware previously but it hadn't resolved the problem.

Ran HijackThis and at the bottom of the list was 'www. prefix'

I selected it, fixed it and...all is well again!
