    Hey

I have a 10gb drive on my laptop with Windows XP installed on it. I have 6Gb free and would like to partition 3 to 4gb. Is it possible to do this on a drive that is being used by XP??

Partition Magic is your non-free option. Ranish Partition Manager is the free option. If you currently have only one partition then you will need to reboot (Ranish only runs from a boot flopy anyway, PM will ask you to reboot). Make sure you defrag first .

You can also boot off a KNOPPIX cd and run QTPARTED and choose the NTFSRESIZE utility. if you have FAT32 changing partition size is safer than with NTFS

Make sure you defrag first (can't say often enough) and have your XP serial no to hand and a backup woundn't hurt. If your NTFS drive has ever gotten full then you may also have a file table file. The built in defrag utility won't defragment the master file table $MFT which if fragmented limits the size you can shirk the volume by.

    Checking MFT Fragmentation
    1. Click Analyze.
    2. Click View Report.
    3. Scroll threw the volume information and look for Total MFT Fragments. One Fragment is the optimal number.

anyone know a freeware defrag util for NTFS that will defrag the MFT ?
