    hey everyone,

I decided to reformat my machine with windows 2000, now on reinstalling it it wont take any ordinary serial key ....I guess somehow my original key is somewhere cached ...how I dont know as I formatted the drive. I have tried about 10 different 2K serials from the web but no joy. Anyone was have any ideas how to uncache this or even a way around it.....cheers in advance

What type of CD you reinstall it from.?

There is no way the CD key would be cached its in the registry and thats wiped with a format.

You could need a OEM which is different to a retail key.

If its OEM the sticker is usually on the PC somewhere. Give us a bit more about the make of PC and the CD you installed it from.

Id advise people not to post any keygens cracks ect cause I got a weeks banning once for helping someone with a similar question.

For OEM windows 2000 and XP the pc should have an OEM sticker on it (many 98 and NT4 PC's will as well)

bit late now but www.magicaljellybean.com have a program that reports the serial currently in the registry.

NB. I've seen reinstalls of windows 95/98 OEM fail because the cert number did not match what the OEM used - so always use the current S/N to reinstall. Also you must use the same version of windows CD - service pack etc. eg SP1 SP1a etc. other versions may have an updated serial validation thingy - this is also why cracked serials are not much use - they will usually fail on the next service pack
