Editing packages - ideas?

Right, so I'm having the most annoying problem in the world.

Im trying to make avi's of some game footage. Im capturing the source footage using Fraps (a brilliant little program that basically converts what your graphics card sees to a full frame uncompressed avi). The movie that fraps creates is basically unusable by anything, so i convert it with virtualdub using xvid or divx. No problems so far - great quality , all very painless.

The problem occurs when i actually want to edit and not just lump 10 clips together with a piece of music (no comments please hugh :p ). Normally I'd use Avid DVExpress, but for some reason this refuses to import xvid very well and it exports it even worse, giving me an awful quality movie.

I tried video vegas. No luck. worst editing tool ever. Videomach and Virtualdub are far too basic for what i need to do. Premier seems good, if a little clunky but i seem to have to render EVERYTHING just to play it on a timeline (no effects, just a xvid clip). This is pretty bloody timeconsuming. It also seems to have export issues.

    So basically to sum up:

Avid - Great editing, poxy quality.
    Premier- ok editing, render issues
Vegas/Videomach - great quality, no editing functionality.

Does anyone know of a program that will help here or more preferably how to get avid to work with xvid/divx (and avoiding the avid codec)

Do you have fireants in your pants? Just putting everything into perspective, is all.

See the beauty of Divx is the superior quality, however I think theres something inate in it's core programing that makes it impossible or v. difficult to change back into other codec.

All I can suggest is, have you tried media cleaner?

Hey! I made a career out of what you described! Some people thought it was Art.

Dustaz, you've just got to realise that it's God telling you not to pirate other people's work. God will smack bottom.

Apparently you can import to Windows Moviemaker and edit, if you can save it to Avi(Pal) then you Divx it with virtualdub.

Do what i do, edit it in premier, export as uncompressed avi then convert to divx xvid or wmv, whatever u want

Thats what i ended up doing. Have you had any experience in importing compressed avi's and somehow NOT rendering them to play?

    haha :)

I figure ive whined and cajoled and been responsibly for avid revenue enough times to justify my little 'test' ....

I dont get what you mean man, uncompressed avi not importing to premier or what? Sometimes even uncompressed files need a codec ya know, even tho they're not compressed...

i use vegas, ive imported uncompressed fraps clips no problem done all my editing etc and rendered with xvid and gotten great quality/filesize, vegas works fine for this just takes a little while to learn how to use

and as far as editing is concerned, i find it a great editing tool

and achilles codec=COmpressDECompress, afaik uncompressed files dont use a codec

and dustaz, am i to take it the game footage is cs? if so tbh i wouldn't bother with fraps, i prefer to grab screenshots through the console, its a little more work but you can do it at 800x600 (fraps only up to 640x480) and i find ive a lot more control doing it this way
