    No you don't.
I always bring mine, but it's just for Identification purposes. I'm paranoid that they'll ask for a 'passport'. Driving licence is fine as far as I know!

    Kev.

Ryanair tend to be snotty about letting people board without passports, so beware if you're flying with them.

not by law , but the airline might not let you board without one at check in , so make sure you check at their site or give them a buzz directly

Read the T&C's of your carrier though.
    They may have other rules.

I've never been asked for ID ever on a Stena sailing. The boarding card thing advises photo ID, so a driver's licence would be fine.

You technically don't need a passport to travel anywhere in the EU as far as I'm aware - but it's always a good idea to carry it when travelling as proof of identity and nationality.

You do need a pasport to travel within the EU just not the UK.

OLDYELLAR, It would be advised to have one, even though you dont technically you dont need one, it might be required by Setna

Flew into Heathrow with BMI in March and didn't get asked for ID once. All I needed was my credit card to collect my tickets and that was it.

There's been a passport free travel arrangement between Britian and Ireland for years (since well before EU border crossings were opened up like they are now). I think it was because of the level of trade and travel between the two countries and I'm sure the North was a factor too.

Strictly speaking they could ask you for a passport, it's just rarely ever done.

why do we need a passport for europe if its supposed to be free borders?? does someone say, travelling from france to germany need one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

    Apologies for my earlier inaccuracy.

Current EU regulations tell us that EU citizens are free to travel as:

"EU citizens have the right to enter, reside and remain in the territory of any other Member State for a period of up to three months simply by presenting a valid passport or national identity card: no other formality is required. If they intend to remain for a period exceeding three months, a residence permit must be obtained. The conditions for granting a residence permit depend on the status of the citizen (employed or self-employed person, student, retired or inactive person)."

This requirement for a passport seems not to exist in the specific situation of citizens traveling between Ireland and the UK. You don't need a passport to drive to Belfast, so why would you need one to get the boat to England? Naturally, it is advisable to carry an acceptable form of photo-ID however, and a passport fits that bill perfectly.

Oh yeah forgot about that, but if you live in the capital go in because that express thing is more expensive than normal.

Went to oakwood a few weeks back with friends. We drove to Rosslare andleft the car there. They never asked for passports. Just to show the tickets (which are a bit odd if you got the package deal). Wern't asked for passports at either ferry teminals.

Had a rough crossing on the way back. It was great to see all those idiots, who spent the trip drinking, curled up in a corner wanting to die. Served em right for being so obnoxious and irritating.
