Custom chapter headings in LaTeX

I'm putting together a small academic paper in latex, I've used the standard report class and divided the document up into chapters using the \chapter tag.

This is all well and good but the chapter headings are really enormous and they are pushed much too far down the page for my liking, the document can't be longer than 10 pages so I'd really like to conserve space if at all possible. Is there any way of redefining the chapter tag to use custom font sizes and styles?, and position it a bit closer to the top margin of the page?

You could copy report.cls to a customised class of your own, and edit it to your needs. I think the part you need to change is \def\@makechapterhead - in mine it starts on line 356.

There's probably a better way, my LaTeX is well rusty.

Thats done the trick, had to give it the full path to the class file though.
