    Following the enormous success of the Asia Extreme Road show 2003 in the UK, Tartan Films is proud to announce the ASIA EXTREME 2004 exclusively with UGC Cinemas is coming to UGC Dublin.

    Tartan Films has opened the lid of this Pandora’s Box of an astonishing world of cinema from Korea and Japan, introducing cinemagoers to the stylish and often violent world of Miike Takashi, Hideo Nakata and the Pang Brothers amongst others.

    Now Tartan Films, which has created the hugely successful Asia Extreme brand for cinemas and video/DVD markets, is now planning to release a selection of new works from Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong.

    With past successes including RING, THE EYE, DARK WATER and AUDITION, it is now time to unleash a whole new selection of Asian titles on the public.

    Throughout the summer and autumn, seven films will be released exclusively at UGC Dublin. Every two weeks a new title will be released, showcasing the new generation of these films to emerge from the East and introducing both new directors and cult favourites like Miike Takashi and Hideo Nakata. Starting with GOZU, followed by A TALE OF TWO SISTERS and THE PHONE.

    GOZU (Japan)
    30 JULY
    Director: Takashi Miike
    Starring: Hideki Sone, Sho Aikawa, Kimika Yoshino and Shohei Hino

    Minami, a member of the Azamawari crew, highly respects his Aniki (brother) Ozaki who has saved his life in the past. However lately Ozaki's eccentricities (like claiming that a Chihuahua he sees is a 'Yakuza attack dog') have been making everyone wonder about his sanity. Chairman Azamawari is unsympathetic to Ozaki's little outbursts and secretly orders Minami to take Ozaki to a disposal facility in the city of Nagoya. There, the fate of these two follows a twisted path filled with violence, mother's milk, strange locals, and ultimately the disappearance of Ozaki's corpse, which Minami now desperately tries to recover.

    A TALE OF TWO SISTERS (Korea)

    Two sisters who, after spending time in a mental institution, return to the home of their father and cruel stepmother. Once there, in addition to dealing with their stepmother's obsessive and unbalanced ways, an interfering ghost also affects their recovery.

    Starring: Ha Ji-won, Kim Yu-mi, Choi Woo-jae, Choi Ji-yeon, Fun Suh-woo.

    Ji-won is an ambitious investigative reporter. Trying to avoid death threats resulting from her most recent case, Ji-won accepts her best friend Ho-jung's offer that she house-sit the Ho-jung family's sprawling mansion. Strange, frightening incidents begin to occur after Ji-won switches her telephone number to protect her privacy. Ho-jung's daughter Yeong-joo answers Ji-won's phone call accidentally, and whatever she heard on the phone seems to transform the girl's personality into that of a vicious monster. After some investigation, Ji-won learns that the fate of the previous owners of her new phone number have all ended in the same way... mysterious death.

    THE ISLE (Korea)
    10 SEPTEMBER
    Director: Ki-duk Kim
    Starring: Jung Suh, Yoosuk Kim and Sung-hee Park

    Mute Hee-Jin is working as a clerk in a fishing resort in the Korean wilderness; selling baits, food and occasionally her body to the fishing tourists. One day she falls in love with Hyun-Shik, who is on the run from the police and rescues him with a fish hook when he tries to commit suicide.

After a series of mysterious deaths in the shopping mall in which his uncle has allowed him to work as a security guard prior to its reopening, he must face both his own fear of mirrors and the mystery surrounding the fire that closed down the mall.

    CHAOS (Japan)
    22 OCTOBER
    Director: Hideo Nakata
    Starring: Masato Hagiwara, Miki Nakatani, Ken Mitsuishi and Jun Kunimura

    A man gets involved in a kidnapping scheme with the wife of a wealthy businessman. She lets herself be tied up and confined in his house while he sends the ransom demand. When he returns home that night he finds her lying dead on the floor. In a panic he buries her body deep in the woods and tries to return to his ordinary life. One day, he thinks he spots her walking down the street. Is his mind playing tricks on him, or has she somehow returned from the grave?
