    http://www.rte.ie/news/2004/0713/radio.html

Effectively the same change as occoured in UK broadcasting with the Broadcasting Act 1990 - ILR licences may change from being awarded by a beauty contest, to being awarded by blind auction.

Will there be a Quality Threshold, I wonder?

Won't pass judgement until I hear what the full details are...

Why do we get so hyped up about Radio Broadcasting?

I generally think that Radio in this country is good.

Local Radio is very Local and at times Kitch (But lets face it that what their there to do)

RTE Radio has to compeat at a high level as they compeat with Irish stations rather then foreign stations.

While our one and only Independent Station competes well with Radio 1 and 2FM. Taking the best from both stations and putting on the one station works.

Lyric and RNaG both provide excellent PSB.

The problems I have with Radio in this country is:

    1. Dublin has to many Radio Stations (Have the BCI forgotten about the rest of the country)
    2. There is only one National Indo Station
    3. There is no Station that Provides a service National Excluding Dublin.

Basically we need another Indo 2FM for the nation, and more stations for everyone outside Dublin.

But what about TV? Quality? mmmmm

Yeah, could do with more National stations, not centred around Dublin.

Here in Donegal, Ocean FM will replace NWR in September, after NWR lost their license. Personally, despite my hate for NWR, I could see no reason why both channels couldn't go head to head, and the best one win!

it used to be even more local though. County Sound based out of Mallow broadcast the Rosary read weekly (actually read, not a tape) on a Saturday evening for a few years after it got its licence. Not that I'd miss it but I imagine it's gone.

KFM won the new Kildare franchise with the old Carlow/Kildare one was split and Carlow merged with Kilkenny.

Was home a few weeks ago and it's the same style presentation, same presenters - you would wonder why the bothered!
