    i once read that you can slow down cd/dvd drives read speeds.
    e.g. from 32x to 2x
    therefore cutting down on that terrible noise.
    i'll only be playing audio cds and dvds.

    is this true?
    is it software/hardware/firmware???

    Nero comes with an app called DriveSpeed that will do it for you. You can also turn down the amount of time it says spun up...

    CD Bremse should do the trick....it's all in German though;)

    try AnyDVD from Slysoft.

    should do the job nicely, amongst other things:)

    it's not free, but it's one of those small apps that are actually worth buying
