Anyone well versed in self powered external hard drives ideally for laptops, around the 60 to 80 gig mark! Like this one from Iomega.

Hard Disk Drive 40GB USB 2.0 4200rpm 2.5" External Portable just short of 190 euro on elara.

    Any help suggestions greatly appreciated.

Have you seen the new 1.8" USB2.0 drives from Transcend? Those are cool, about the size of a mobile phone.

Class, know anywhere to buy them in Ireland? I'd say they would cost a fair bit more.

Someone at work has a 80gb drive I'll ask him where he got it.

If you could please ask him the price and check to see if it's self powered. Sound

The Lacie ones are nice, got a 3.5 one, can't remember where I got it (some UK internet shop). 2.5 ones are self powered (by second usb cable) AFAIK.

Yeah. It has an additional PS2/USB cable used to boost the power if it can't get enough from the primary USB port. Its one of the few places doing a 2.5" in 80gb size and the faster 7,200rpm speeds. Quite expensive though.

Which is why I have two 3.5 externals. 1x80gb (7,200) and 1x120gb (7,200). I needed space and performance. I bought the enclosures €65ea and already had the drives from another system. They are a lot quicker than the internal 60gb on my laptop. A 3.5 is going to be a lot cheaper than a 2.5". But you do end up with a lot of extra cables. If I ever have lots of money, I'll replace them with those pocketec drives.
