I have ordered a new Norton package after fear that I was attacked and am wondering if this will get rid of the ba*st*ar*ds* or is it too late?

    Hi Skyuser,

"It depends" is the short answer.

First of all, you have to establish if you were, in fact, being "attacked".

Do you have a single computer on a broadband or dial-up connection? Or do you have a network of computers behind a firewall? Or do you have something in between? What OS('s) are you using?

What form did the "attack" take? What makes you think you were attacked? Do you have any evidence of intrusion? Are you sure it was an attack or have you perhaps been experiencing the usual scans by infected machines?

I can't comment on the "new Norton Package" because you haven't said what you've ordered and, anyway, we haven't established that there is, in fact, something that needs fixing.

As for "getting rid" of them: Again, is there actually someone to get rid of? If you have, in fact, been compromised then the ONLY solution is to reinstall from scatch.

Post some more information (in answer to some of the above questions) and I'm sure you'll get a more detailed reply.

    Regards,

    Liam

PS I've made the assumption that the "attack" of which you speak is an attempt by badguys to compromise your system, as opposed to being exposed to some malware/virus/trojan/etc.

If you have an unpatched, unfirewalled windows machine on broadband you can assume it's been probed and probably exploited after about half an hour.

    Prevention is better than cure.

NB -depends on which norton package for which OS but you'd want to get other apps too to get rid of spyware etc. - check the stickies
