Connectivity issues with P800

I've got a Sony Ericsson P800 with a vodafone ready to go sim.
I set my phone's internet settings up on sony-ericsson's website, filling in my phone number and operator and receiving auto settings.
I did it and it works fine in the default browser, I can go online and visit websites etc.
But with any third party app(IRC, Messenger, Opera, Putty), I get a little window saying connect ro Vodafone WAPGPRS-GPRS and I click yes, but it never works, I look at the connection status and the upload kilobytes are increasing but the download kilobytes always stay at 0.0
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? The connection settings seem to be right because they work fine in the default browser.

They won't work over the WAP connection, you would need to connect to the ISP GPRS service which unfortunately isn't available to Ready To Go customers. Alternatively a dial-up connection would work but as HSCSD (High Speed Data) isn't available to Ready To Go customers either it won't be very fast (some RTG customers managed to be set-up on HSCSD but they seem to have slipped through as others have been refused)...

Is it the same with O2?

hi, no, O2 do offer an ISP GPRS service to pre-pay (Speakeasy) customers, so you could use it with that, there was a time a while back when I had some problems using some 'ports' so I'd need to check if any of the apps (other than regular browsing/email) would have any issues now... and bear in mind pre-pay GPRS per KB charge isn't cheap...

let me know the apps you wanted to use and i'll take a look if you want

Mainly Agile Messenger but also symIRC and putty
The price per kilobyte for running messenger for example would work out a lot cheaper than text messages wouldn't it

i'll pop them on a P800 and slip in a Speakeasy SIM tomorrow when I have a chance and let you know

cost wise it will depend how much data you plan/end up using, here's the Speakeasy tariff info, currently 3c per KB

ok got a bit of time tonight to give this a shot...

tried Algile Messenger with MSN and it worked ok on Speakeasy, but no joy with symIRC or putty

could connect fine on post-pay with Algile Messenger and symIRC, but putty kept crashing...

were you using putty from dreo.org? i could only track down v0.5 as their site was offline and it dates back to Jan '03... so it may just be buggy

My version of putty is 0.5 too I think its the latest, from my-symbian.com, I can live without it anyways.
