NEVER flash a drive unless its absolutley necessary. You were right to flash the DVD by the sounds of it, but as the CDRW was working perfectly, you should have well enough alone.

What I never understand though, is why manufacturers don't backup the original to a file on the computer before the flash begins... Just in case of a situation where it all goes wrong...

what can be done for the computer to reconise the two drives

    Troubleshooting 101
Have you tested each drive individually because if both are on the same channel the "faulty" one could be pulling down the IDE channel.
maybe they will both work individually and you can sort out your flashing mess

I have to agree with CyberGhost and doodle_sketch dont flash unless totally necessary because when things go wrong they go WRONG as you found out.

Why did you decide to flash the cd writer anyway?
Obviously there's a point in flashing a dvd drive as you can make it RPC1 and region free (or is it RPC2). But what benefit do you get out of flashing a cd writer?
