Dáil bar to apply for a pub licence

The Oireachtas is to apply for a licence for the Dáil bar after it emerged that the pub at Leinster House does not have one.

The bar itself was recently at the centre of controversy when Fine Gael TD, John Deasy, was rapped for smoking inside it.

A spokeswoman for the Oireachtas today confirmed that the bar has never had a licence to serve alcohol because the legal interpretation was that it did not need one.

Now the Oireachtas is to apply for a licence to remove any uncertainty over its legal status.
