Chosing a Band Name

What do you think of calling a band 'Academy' ?

We're having real trouble thinking up a good one (obv ^)

I have 2 criteria;

1--> Not a 'The' name

2-->No 'clever' :rolleyes: misspellings!

eg; 'The Noyz Merchantz' would be completely unacceptable!

indeed I will! If I had a cooler user name I'd definitely wear a t-shirt with it on it! I've never been to one either. Should be a good gig anyway!

Here's the thing about band names... nobody cares as much as you! Just don't think about it and let it develop by itself. I mean how many **** band names are there of bands that you listen to but you don't notice how bad their name is cos either you didn't think about it (which most people won't) or you got used to it. Muse, Radiohead, Mogwai anyone?

Meh, there are too many 'name' bands mulling around, you'd get lost in the mush - Keane, Saville, F Ferdinand, Franklin just from looking at the Witnegen line up. There are hundereds more to be found in NME. Just way too 'whatever they're calling Britpop these days' for me. It really ties the band down to a genre, regardless of what your sound is.

I think the sign of a good band name is, if you saw it on a poster, would you be into checking out the band? Darwin? No, sounds like a poxy NME wannabe band. Thumbs down. Sorry dear boy

I take your point and the more I think about it the more I agree

the 'Ride or Riot' idea circumnavigated such problems didn't it?

It's your call. If I saw Ride Or Riot on a poster or a link on Boards I'd be interested, it suggests music with a bit of attitude, a bit of energy. Darwin suggests anonymity. I know which one I'd be more likely to check out, but that's just me. But as I said, it's your band, your call.

What sort of stuff are ye doing, out of curiosity?

Edit -> I suppose the acid test is visualising taking to the stage "Hello we're ....................." <what sounds right there?

Think Beatles doing a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody with Rory Gallagher on lead guitar, that guy with the nose from Slipknot who plays drums on all fours, Damien Rice and Paul Noonan playing 4 handed triangle (Wo!) backing vocals from Jack L fronted by Jack Black on air guitar and introduced by that guy from the fast show saying "Grreat!"

Ride Or Riot works for me, it has a sound to it that flows and isn't too generic nor too indicitve of a particular scene or sound... which is a good thing IMO. Still it arouses curiosity and lets you know it's going to rock, even if you don't know how.

Just texted our bass player and got a positive response- he wasn't crazy about Darwin either. I think ROR just might stick! Im off for 2 weeks after today but I'll update you when i get back!

Just back the other night! Sorry to drag this up again but we practiced on Thursday and no name could be agreed upon by more than 2 members! It's a flippin nightmare at this stage!!!

What Doctor J said about the one word band names being simply the done thing nowadays really stuck with me- i really want a phrase or two or three words! "Riot or Ride" was the best so far I reckon but the whole band didnt like it.

I used to always want to call a band "All Pints One Euro", well, it used to be pounds, or "Women Drink Free", advertise that for a gig and you're guaranteed to pull a crowd! Then change your name to a better one once you have a following! Hehehe.
