Sky are airing a new programme on Sat. nights next season called Football First. Here's what the blurb says:
'....showing 50 minute highlights of every Prem. game played on a Saturday - and you get to choose which one yo watch'

    Sounds great. What's the catch?

    For €1.50, I'll take it.

Previously on Sky Change to your sub letter:

    All New Buffy!
    All New Angel!
When it comes to Movies, we've got the ones which you either didn't bother to rent on DVD coz they were cr*p or the one's you did!

This makes up for the last three increases in my book.

Football First on Sky will be a 45-minute highlight packages of each of the matches played that Saturday, all running at the same time on their interactive digital channels at 10pm, i.e. you choose your match. They will also show FULL footage of one match at 8.30 on Saturday evenings. The new show will be fronted by Clare Tomlinson

Match of the Day on the Beeb won't start until 10.30 on Saturday nights. It's a big blow for them. They paid £105million in winning back the three-year Premiership football rights from ITV, but won't even be the first in Britain to air the highlights.

How did Sky sneek that into the contract?

In all honesty, I don't think this will even dent Match of the Day viewership.

itv bravo and sky all bid for that package. it was thought that they would sell for around 20 million but sky bid 60 million to wipe away the competition..so anyone could have bouught the rights.. it was not sky saying they should start at 8.30pm.
dosent matter much to irish viewers cos rte/setanta will be showing a live match every saturday at 3pm.

Also RTE has Premiership highlights at 7pm, aswell as the match at 3pm. In your face BBC.

    hmmmmmmmmmmm

The Premiership or Match Of The Day. is there really any contest? the only thing RTÉ has going for it is the live 3pm game

Well, Lawrenson and Hansen are probably the most boring pundits on television, who've been saying the same things every year now for a decade. They will never say anything controversial, for fear of upsetting their friends within the game.

Give me a Dunphy - Brady mud fight over that anyday.

Altough the BBC have the widescreen of course.

Will RTE be screening a match EVERY Saturday at 3pm? I thought they had only got the rights to show a handful of matches over the course of the season???

No, RTÉ have 15, as do Setanta, they are sharing 30 games equally between them.

the difference being, Setanta will be charging a rediculous amount to watch their 15 matches. At last we will be getting something for our License fee off RTE. Any sign of the schedule yet?

RTE will have the weekends where there are no rugby matches -

Autumn Internationals, 6 nations and Heineken Cup on RTE for about 15 wekeends and they'll have live 3pm football on the other saturdays.

RTE did show 30 seconds of domestic football on the news last sunday with Cork City reaching the quarter finals of a European competition. However they will no doubt not repeat that mistake again for a few years.

Im not sure bout Rugby dictating the Saturdays that RTE show live Prem. I cant see Setanta playing second fiddle like that. Far more likely they will broadcast on alternate weeks and if there is a rugby clash one of the sports will be shown on RTE1. No fixtures announced yet.

No, RTÉ made it clear when the won the rights that if there is sport on Network 2 that Saturday, (like 6 nations rugby) there will be no live Premiership game on RTÉ, it would be shown on Setanta. They'd only be competing against themselves, and I for one, from a PSB point of view, hate to see boths weekend days hogged by sport on both channels. There are a lot of folk who dont like either rugby and football, and would like to watch telly at the weekends too.

It is in RTÉ's interest to show Rugby and give it due prominence when they have matches to show, that they already commited to.

Does anyone know if you can watch one of these matches while recording another on Sky +?

You usually cannot record interactive programmes so I doubt if you will be able to recored one match while watching another.

I heard an interview with the head of Setanta Sport on the last word a few weeks ago, and he said that NTL will be putting out Setanta as part of thier standard package. If thats the case its free footy all round!!!

Yes, lets get this clear for anyone who isn't sure.... (Basically reiterating what DMC said in the other thread)

Setanta Sport Ireland will be available to all ntl customers on both the basic analogue & digital platforms at no extra charges.

The only word from setanta about it being available on Sky digital is by e-mail saying that it will be available as an add on channel for between €10 and €13 per month. This isn't nesseserily cast iron though, there have been no press releases about it as yet. We'll just have to wait & see.
