I'm thinking of spending a few days each in Rome and Berlin or Munich this August. Anyone have any tips for these cities?

Any hostels you'd recommend/avoid? (I'd like to find hostels that are good for meeting people as I'll be travelling alone).

    Thanks!

The clubhouse hostel in Berlin is great, i stayed there recently. Good place to meet fellow travellers and helpful, friendly staff.
It's cheap, clean and in a superb central location.

Check out the hostel reviews at http://www.bugeurope.com

Munichs a great City. If you do go head down to Gunther Murphys and you'll meet plenty of people there. There's a campsite in Thalkirchen which is good too; tents cant be rented there

I'm in Berlin at the moment, doing some work. It's surprisingly cheap (pints between 2 and 3 euro) and people are exceptionally friendly even if like me you can't speak a word of German. I'm in the Kreuzberg area, loads of good bars and food places open more or less 24 hours there about Wiener Strasse, Skalitzer Strasse and Oranien Strasse. Check out http://www.exberliner.com/ Its the english language mag here and it's a pretty good guide. This hostel is pretty good http://www.globetrotterhostel.de/ if you don't mind a place with no kitchen, otherwise http://www.baxpax.de/eng/home/ is decent.

I was working a bit in Rome 3 years ago but can't remember much about it except they aren't big drinkers. Can't even remember if it was pricey cos everything was in that lira stuff.
