Installing SATA Drives

When I installed windows xp with a WD740 raptor, I did not hit F6 and subsequently windows installed and recognized the SATA drive as a "3rd master" (dvdrom and dvdrw drives are pri master/slave).
My question: I have been told that SATA drives run as UDAMA-6. I have also been told that the drivers for the SATA drives are embedded in windows xp and that is why I didn't need to load anything during installation (F6).The current transfer mode is listed as a UDMA5(sisoftsandra). I don't see a UDMA6 listed in the BIOS. I thought the Raptor should be in the UDMA6 category. SisoftSandra also says the drive is not running at optiomal speed. Can anybody cast any light on this.

The WD is listed as running on an ATA Controller and the 2 drivers listed for it are
    1. disk.sys
    2. PartMgr.sys

If someone running a single raptor chould check and see what drivers are loaded for their Raptor, are they the same or different.

You probably have it running in compatibility mode, ie. your motherboard is emulating the drive as an ATA drive. Don't know how it works with MSI but I'd imagine it's pretty similar to the other manufacturers.

There's a screen in my BIOS (ABIT IC7-G) where you set up the drives, and I have different options for running SATA drives.

What you should do is install the SATA drivers first (no, they don't come with Windows XP), then when Windows asks to reboot, go into BIOS, change the settings to run the drive in native SATA mode and hopefully windows will start up as normal.

The downside of the approach you've chosen is that one of your IDE channels is now taken up by the emulated SATA drive. You won't be able to add another ATA drive.

Also, you have the DVD-ROM and DVD-RW on the same channel, not the best way to set this up. Since you don't have any additional drives, you should set each of those drives to be a master on it's own channel, it will help if you're doing drive-to-drive copy. (on-the-fly recording).

The ATA emulation comes in really handy if you're using DOS programs and want them to access your SATA drive. (I needed it to get Norton Ghost to move my old drive to the new SATA Raptor).

    Hope this helps.
